As a christmas present for my nephew I built an 'Autopilot' box that he can connect to any kind of Scalextric Digital system.
The box I built has 2 channels, with switches for both brake and lane change and a potentiometer knob for throttle.
I reverse-engineered the hand controller's resistor values and used about the same values in the box.
Here's the schematics of a hand controller, as I've not found it anywhere on the net, I though someone could be interested to see how it's connected.
Here's the finished box.
Read the instructions on my blog for details on how to build your own.
Good question !
Nice job Anttu, back in the days, before we knew pacers in SSD software, I had something similar;
Not as neat and not so many functions as yours, but It worked, and used 1 channel. We never got to the point to do something with lane changing though.
Minardi,
Did you not also create a "plug" for ID'ing cars without the use of a controller?
I thought it also had some resistors in it but no toggle switches for brake and lane change.
Could that "plug" be modified with a rheostat to vary the speed? Could be an even simpler way to control a pace car AND ID cars at the same time!

Out of curiosity, what use have you found for the brake switches?
Good question
That's up to the user's imagination, but I was thinking that if you line up the controlled cars on the start grid including the one you will be driving yourself, it could be useful to set the brakes on and switch them both off when you like to start. However, this is maybe more fun/useful for the younger drivers that's not taking it too serious
The brake switch can of course be left out if you don't find any need for it!
Leaving the lane switch ON would result in ALL lane changes automatically, leaving it OFF will result in no lane changes, right?
Leaving the brake switch ON would..... stop the car until turned OFF.... so what is the difference with using a regular controller re: brakes? Someone would have to operate the switch constantly to use the brakes, right?

I can see the LC switch but not the brake one. Emergency braking for the pacers in case of a pile up ahead on the track as it would be too slow with the knob ... or in case a dog suddenly runs out in front of the pacer

No, that wasn't me. I know MartinT did something clever with the 4 car PB, and so did I but slightly different, but not with a plug. Good idea though.

Exactly what Chris said! My daughter and I were having a great time last night driving our Italian Job Minis on reduced power while being chased by the little blue and white Police Mini set up as a fast, constant speed pacer (C7042). The stressful bit was getting to our cars after an off, before the mental little rozzer could ram them and send more headlights and bumper bits flying. I had a controller nearby to plug in to stop the pacer, but I'm sure you all have experienced "controller-can't find the hole"-it's worse under stress! Anttu's little pacer box WITH a brake switch would have been just the ticket!
