Photobucket gets nasty

I've just visited one of my SF pages and all my lovely pics have been replaced by an message saying "Please update your account to enable 3rd Party Hosting".

Went to Photobucket and found their new Terms & Conditions (as of June 27th). Loads of small print but the bottom line is that if you want 3rd Party hosting (i.e. your Slot Forum pics are at Photobucket) it's going to cost you $399.99 A YEAR!

So, for the 2nd time in 2 years all my old posts have no pics and I've got to re-load everything. I'm not happy.

That's awful. I'd be absolutely fuming.

You'd expect a lengthy advanced warning period for such a drastic change to their terms.

Terrible service.
Well that's interesting. I have to say, given that i've never looked at one of their (or anyone else's) advert online, that this day had to come.
If true and I have no reason to believe not but have simply not read the small print myself, I can assure you I won't be paying and I won't be relinking which effectively means the end of the fora as repositories of beautiful old threads.....
An extremelly sad day I would say.

I think I'm still paying $25/yr for Flickr Pro, and I've only had one problem with the service in about 10 years. Pretty much every pic you see me post on here is hosted on Flickr. On very rare occasions, usually when it's a picture 'borrowed' from elsewhere on the net that doesn't fit with what I want to hold in Flickr, I will use the hosting here via my SF+ subscription.
Hi
postimage is free (at the moment )and very easy to use.

this pic is loaded straight to the site from my comp, why do you need 3rd party hosting sites. Is it the quantity you have or size of pics.

Timely topic for me I have to say. I used SF's site but it got a bit steep as I didn't have much to share.

Does anyone know if you can post images from your icloud account?

rdr, how did you do it from your computer? Does it have to be on 24/7 to stay up? (I am a I.T. moron and quick to admit it.)
used the "more reply options" button and uploaded the image
Strange, my Photobucket images on here have not disappeared yet.

On photos in general, Plus members have been able to upload pictures to the site direct from their computers ever since the upgrade.

We are currently in the process of extending this to non Plus members, look here:

I've used Photobucket for years, not had your problem though. All still ok.
Very odd. Hope you get it sorted.

This is interesting. I opened my PB account several years ago, then let it lie dormant, wholly unused for a couple of years. Over the last year had occasion to get in, was surprised frankly to see all my old photos there (it being free and dormant, I assumed they'd wipe it clean).

Just logged into PB, have no similar admonishment (warning? threat?), all my photos posted here and there linked to my PB account are still up and running.

Ditto - no problems here... used free photobucket for many years, then upgraded to the lowest level last year, just to make sure I've got enough room, but haven't received any message like that - almost sounds like some kind of ransomware! $400/year is just not in line with their whole approach.

Taken from their T's & C's :

  • Free account : Each individual Member gets one free account that provides 2 GB of free storage or space available for your original photo files, or videos under 10min. The free account does not allow any image linking or 3rd party image hosting. If a free account Member exceeds their Content Limit, their account will be immediately suspended and they will need to become a "Paying Member" (defined below) in order to continue accessing their account. You can upgrade to a Plus account at any time.

As I've always said, uploading images to slotforum should not be a plus member benefit, it should be available to anyone who contributes content to this site. That is the primary reason people come here.

The alternative is a situation we now find ourselves in, third party hosting pulls the plug, all the excellent content on this site is diminished.

Slotforum looses.

We're working on that, as mentioned by CMOTD above.
I don't know what your definition of 'always' is but the facility only became available in February this year with the upgrade and if you have been saying it for longer then you must have a crystal ball. We only found out by accident that it was available to Plus members fairly recently. Since when we have been working on extending it to everybody as I said above.

Looking at PB's terms and conditions it seems that they were updated on June 28th so it looks like they have done this in the last couple of days. There is likely to be an awful lot of peed off users as it was used by thousands of people for 3rd party hosting on forums all over t'internet.
Historically that option of direct upload was not available.
I have many threads (not to mention how-tos in my shop section) all with images fom Photobucket!!
Obviously from now on I will use direct upload, it is the historic stuff that is lost.
Andi
It is a great shame to lose all your old photos - I only read the thread on your spaceframe vanwall just a few days ago - it was brilliant but just looked today and now the photos are gone :(
Hi

effectively now holding your images to ransom pay up or lose out, it would seem a lot fairer to introduce that fee to accounts after the changes to t&c's but how many big firms play fair

I do hope that you have not lost your images totally and that you have backed them up somewhere

currently I use 3 free sites to store images so have them in triplicate if needed.

Annoyingly, I thought I had saved the Vanwall thread but find I only saved the first page. I wanted to post the whole thing again. It was an amazing build and a tragedy that you should be held to ransom like this.
