I would like to add that I thoroughly enjoyed the day and endorse all the comments said previously. The best thing of the day was everyone was friendly and positive Making all the effort well worthwhile. The idea is to make this an annual event and as this was the clubs first open race competition we would like to have some feed back. I missed a trick in not getting contact details and sending out a SHORT survey so I will try this platform to get feedback on the day from competitors. So just three questions ..
What part of the day did you like ? How can we improve ? And lastly will you come back next year possibly the same time of year , hopefully no snow ..
if you wish you can send your reply PM, but as any event organisers will say, feed back is always welcome.
if you request that Steve Hills is blindfolded next year it will be considered but remember there is the other Hills whose is just as fast.. but seriously if there is anything we can improve on for . next year.. please speak up.
Thanks to you all for your energy and commitment in participating and we look forward to seeing you all next year.

The facility is excellent, hospitality first class, organisation flawless, I think you nailed it and I would be more than happy to drive 3 hours to see you next year if you have me. We'll done

Yes, what David said.
For those travelling long distance finishing by 5pm is a good thing...
But having said that I liked the long heats as it allowed guests to get to grips with the new track. 3 minute heats never allow that.

I agree with Mr.Farrow. Before the meeting, I thought one class for a days racing was not enough, but I’ve gotten used to meetings having the same number of drivers, but with 3 minute heats, and finals that are shorter than the heats. One class with substantial heats was fine, and the marathon finals gave plenty of time for someone to fall off and to catch back up, so the winners were worthy, not just lucky.
maybe start a little earlier and finish for 5 is the only suggestion for improvement.
i would recommend the meeting to anyone.

Steve Hills unleashes True Speed to win WSR Policar GP

Steve Hills (Mr Truspeed) drove a perfect race meeting - he never de - slotted once throughout the whole day....not even practice !!!.... to take a deserved win at the Wirral Slot Racing Policar GP........the final was over 150 laps and for almost 100 of them the Pete Crane Ferrari followed literally an inch or two behind the March that Steve used......while Paul Taylor and David Farrow had both spent many laps in front of Pete racing side by side with Steve.....until a couple of crashes meant that only Steve and Pete were left to slug out the final in a very entertaining race, that kept the room silent as Pete gradually worked his way from behind David and Paul to inch up towards the March that Steve was driving with precision and cunning.......after shadowing Steve for around 50 laps.....Pete tried to make his move and overtake Steve....who countered the move by Pete ....by also speeding up....causing Pete to overdrive and push his car just a fraction too hard...which then oversteered too far......his car de -slotted...and that was that....Steve was gone and took the well deserved win.

Paul Taylor and David Farrow also enjoyed many laps of side by side dicing on the well built and entertaining to drive (despite it's compact nature...) Wirral track built by Paul Taylor with support from the WSR club members......Paul just sneaking the final podium place after David let it all hang out in a banzai blast.....that failed ........too many off's.....but huge credit to David for making the A final on his first ever visit to the WSR club.....all the other A finalist's knew the track well and David has much to be proud of in his achievement.

The real winners of the day though.....were all the Policar enthusiasts who enjoyed a great day out at the friendly but ever so competitive event.....due to really bad snow the entry list was down.....David Lawson, Tony Avis, John Moxon and Stephen Moxon are all experienced Policar open meeting drivers......who would have added so much to the meeting.....they were all really missed...maybe next time......

Jeff Norton, Rob Heseltine, Paul Cooper, Moss Hills, Peter Wright, Paul Minnis, John Dodd, Mike Williamson, David Mitcham, Adam Price and of course Mr Policar himself - Andi Rowland - all drove really well during the meeting...the standard of driving was exceptional in my opinion.....almost every race during the day was decided after proper slot car racing...very few 'off's'....every one lapping within a few tenths....lots of side by side dicing...all topped off by the sight of the oh so good scale Policars battling together on track.

The Spirit of the Meeting award went to Mark Brandwood.....who has only recently returned to slot car racing and was running a brand new 'out of the box' Policar.....Mark drove really well and was competitive all day.....the meeting had run like clockwork in every respect except that for some unknown reason....Mark's car missed the odd lap somehow as it crossed the electronic lap counting system.....but Mark coped with the situation very well...no dummies were thrown out the pram...pulled himself together....and drove some great races to move through the step up final system.....and clearly enjoyed his whole Policar day out.

More info on the great day out racing Policar at the Wirral Slot Racing club

Although this was the first open meeting that the Wirral Slot Racing (WSR) club had ever put on, the event has set a very high standard in so many ways....and so I thought that it may be of interest to anyone involved in the national Policar racing scene to learn more about all the good stuff that went on.

So here are my thoughts......

Paul Taylor, Paul Cooper and Peter Wright of WSR did an excellent job of planning and organisation for the day, they really thought about how to make the best of the facilities at WSR and worked together to put a great meeting on.

The fact that they chose only to run one class on the day - standard Policar - and the fact that it was a one day meeting....seemed important to me. The whole day was relaxed...doors opened at 9.30 am.....and everyone had lots of track time...with first time visitors always given preference on track during practice.

Racing started around 1 pm and the day finished around 5.30 pm.....a relaxing drive to the track and a relaxing drive home....many of us are no longer spring chickens....so 'relaxing' works well for us.....

The entry fee was £15...but for that....as well as a great day's Policar racing...every entrant had free hot drinks all day plus a really good hot lunch....followed by some truly excellent cake.....and various snacks and treats available at any time.....I do understand that not every club has the facility to do this.....but it certainly adds to the appeal of a day out racing at WSR....the coffee produced by Paul Taylor.....is really really good.....thanks to Paul and his friend Ian who provided the hot drinks...again the fact that Paul asked a non slot racing friend to act as hot drink provider on the day....shows the great thought and consideration that WSR put into the event.

Another interesting new feature was the way that WSR set up and delivered a proper in race commentary system, in the picture you can see that Moss Hills is wearing a mic kit and this was hooked up to discreet room speakers....various racers provided commentary during the day and all did a great job....it added so much to the event and also gave every racer a great in race picture of where they were in comaprison to other competitors...both in race and also in terms of the overall qualifying and/or step up final situation.

A special mention too for WSR club member Steve.....although a winner at WSR club.....Steve decided to spend the day marshalling and generally being available to help solve any problem for racers or club....great job Steve.....thank you for all that marshalling and running of the start/track call system.

As only one class was being run, all the qualifying heats were 5 minutes....all laps to count from running on all 4 lanes.....the computer race control system had been set up to ramdonise who raced against who in all the heats....and it all seemed to work really well to me.

Another mark of the care that WSR had put into the meeting was that the whole race computer system had been tried out and perfected during the 2 previous weekly club nights...running timed heats and then lap based step ups' took some great computer work to organise...well done to the WSR team for a great job with race control.

Plenty of time to settle in to each race...the odd bad nerf or confused marshall...not such a big problem in 5 minute heats....added to the long step up finals and 3 hours of open practice.....everyone who came to the WSR Policar event went home having had lots of track time.....for those who do not have a local club or home track...that makes a big difference to the enjoyment of the day...especially if you have travelled a long way.

Once qualifying was complete the top 2 drivers went straight to the A final, while everyone else ran through 'step up' finals of at least 100 laps....with the top 2 from each final race 'moving up' to race in the next final.....this system produced lots of really good racing....the longer than usual finals allowing everyone to settle down and really enjoy close racing with people lapping around the same times...the racing was meaningful and as 2 moved up the dice for second place was often really tight and only decided in the last few seconds.

Another interesting innovation was that cars lined up on the starting grid in qualifying order...just like in real F.1.....reducing the 'first corner shunt' risk .....yet still producing some really tight racing from the off.....partly because the 'stepper uppers' were already in the groove from the previous race....while the the pre qualifyers were basically not.....almost all step up finals saw 4 cars racing side by side for the first 50 laps or so......great to watch and great to participate in.

None of the Policars in use had any mechanical problems during racing, (although David Farrow did manage to break a chassis in practice.....) and all seemed well matched...the racing was ever so close although Jeff Norton used the new BRM to great effect and I think ended up with the fastest lap time on the day.........

I plan to send all entrants a more detailed record of the meeting, one thing WSR did not have on the day was a printer so I need to spend more time than I have available right now on working out the full finsihing order at the meeting by checking through the step up final pics on my phone....but it just re inforces what a great job the WSR crew did on the day.....nothing else for me or anyone else to moan about !

Great track, great club room, great organisation, great food and drink, great racing......great smiles from all who attended - basically a great job WSR in every way.

cheers

Joe - If you click on the link it will take you to photos of the track and clubhouse. It looks a great facility and it was very disappointing that David Lawson and myself didn't make it.
Liverpool is about a 4 hour drive for us and neither of us have ever visited before so we thought we would do a bit of tourism as well and had planned a visit to The Beatles Experience on the Friday but hopefully we can get there for the weekend next year.

Thank you Steve, I made a complete hash of the final. I was fast enough but nerves go the better of me, too many offs that made the tyres dirty and then I was just getting in the way. Well done on your result.
