I've decided I need some Porsches in my rally car collection. Currently, I'm into Ninco's produce but I bought one of their 911s (the "Rothmans" Rally 1984 version) and punted it straight on again without taking it off the plinth. It looks like it's on stilts!

I couldn't be bothered to open it up to see if there is any way the body can be dropped further onto the chassis.

So, what rally Porsches do you recommend, please?

Currently on my list I have the Ninco 996 (50256) and 997 (50538), and the Fly (88261, 88278, 88170 or 88343). TBH, I'm wary of the Fly offerings as the only Fly model I have at the moment (BMW E30) doesn't handle at all how I would like it to - but that may have something to do with the front-mounted motor.

There are two rally versions of the SCX Porsche 997 GT3 available in Spain. Both lovely. I haven't run my one yet, but imagine it will be right on the money.

The Fly Porsche 911 is a lovely thing to look at. Having the motor in the 'correct' place behind the rear axle means that, non mag, you need to put 10-15g of lead in the nose but the rewards are huge. Absolutely lovely things.

There's also the Fly Racing Porsche 911 , which is a good investment for speed. Inline open can motor with plenty of magnetic pull on the rails, lightweight car - fast!

Ninco... the rally 996 is the 4WD Pirelli 'zero' car I think. It's like most other NC2 cars, only a bit shorter so even wilder on the exit of a corner if you hit the gas early. I haven't tried the 997 as it looks like a bar of soap to me!

There's also the dear old Scalextric Spain/SCX Porsche 911. I had one of these as a kid and it was a cracker. At our club today, one of these little beauts remains one of the fastest cars in our stock SCX rally class. It's not the most accurate model but it's got huge character. I can't wait to find another one.

I race a ninco 997 and they are great pretty much from the box, easily upgradable. I personally love the look of these because they sit nice and low - not ideal for rough rally tracks, more a tarmac set up!

The Fly racing porsche is another quick and tuneable car and is good but the crown gears can be a weakness, but an easy fix with a slot-it gear.

Don't overlook the older Tecnitoys/SCX 911 - very nice although the wheels don't tend to be round and the motors are not quick - cars handle very well though.

The AutoArt 996's are gorgeous and cheap these days. They go very well also although I needed to glue the rear tyres on as my Ninco track pulled them off.

Stuart you really should have given the Rothmans 911 a go, it is one of the best handling rally cars 'out of the box' that I have experienced. Yes, it looks like it is on stilts but it does not appear to effect the handling, it is quicker around my (small) test track than my MSC Metro 6R4!

The Ninco 911 is a superb rally car, look at the Slot Rally GB results, the Rothmans one isn't the nicest looking, but the Kenwood one is very nice, mine is one of my quickest rally cars.

I love my Fly Targa winning 911RSR. With a bit of weight in the bow it is fun to drive.

While not a 911 I suspect the NSR 997 is one of the best 911-type runners. There is a white version you could probably dress up. Do you want authenticity or performance?

A front/mid-mounted mag, like in the Ninco WRC cars, seems to suit my track and driving style nicely - it keeps the guide in the slot without reducing the drift potential.

BTW, my track is mostly Scalextric Sport but with a smattering of classic and an SCX Rally Chrono pack.

Take the magnets out, you don't need them, especially for a rally car.
The MRRC 911 has an accurate body for an early 911, but the chassis needs a little work to make it handle and the motor is over geared.
The Ninco 911 is also to scale and it's chassis could be used with either an MRRC body or an ARII one, it definitely fits the Arii body.

I think the Scalextric and SCX 911s are over scale, but haven't checked.

The Fly Racing 911 is also good, the ordinary Fly 911s look nice but the motor positioning makes the handling interesting.

Hi Stubeedoo,

Are you in the SCX Proxy too?? TBH I have the Ninco 997 "Entrecanales/Insivar/Nupel" trio and am looking to add another 997 in distinct livery/colour BUT I dont really consider the cars to run as Rally.... they're really a super GT class thing. i am interested by Leo's comments as I have not bought any of the Autoarts. TBH I run some cars in non-mag and some in mag as I feel it really depends on how the drive feels. My SCX Escort Mk2's are all non-mag wheras my Ninco cars are all on mag as they give a better feel.... besides the deslots in Ninco's can be brutally damaging due to their speed/power.... so why not let Ninco know best? The SCX C4's run well in mag form. The Xsara's are nice non-mag with tuning effort. I really like the C2 .... not fast but a real challenge and I have a bevy of old SCX Renault Megane Mk1's which are a handfull non-mag. best advice would be to buy four/two of a single model and re-livery/tune to give interesting racing. Playing with a PowerSlot Polo right now but not advisable for those of a sensitive disposition - even when Pendle have them for a tenner - HM gov outlawed "white-noise" in the 70's but PowerSlot didn't hear........ they could ave been deaf.

It's a set I'd like to complete some day too. My wish list would be:

Early 911 - MRRC with a 10k motor and better gearing
1970s 911 - Fly 911 RS with about 10-15g of lead up front
1980s 911 - SCX/Technitoys box standard
Rocketship 911 - Fly Racing suitably tweaked and liveried
Modern 911 - SCX 997

I ended-up buying a Fly car. I had to fit a weak mag because the car wouldn't trigger my Chrono. But other than that, it's mint! Well pleased.
