Hi
I've recently expanded my layout and have noticed drops in power at certain sections of the track and a return to full, smoother power closer to the power connection track. Can someone please explain a "how to" on power taps to more evenly distribute power? I'm using Carrera track & the Trakmate power supply.

Hans,

Andy at Professor Motor has some already assembled power taps for Carrera track. I use thm and find them to be excellent. His website also has installation instructions for them. They require no soldering and are simple to install. Though they normally come with six foot lead wires, he will also make them with longer ones if you need them. His site address is www.professormotor.com.

good luck.

Can you please post a link to the installation instructions? I cant find them.

One thing you can do that is very cheap and easy is use copper strips for a friction clip. This is the same way that Carrera uses to connect power wire to their power track. Since the rails on the Carrera track are stainless steel it is really a pain in the ass to solder wire to. So you cut a strip of copper and bend it into a V shape. The width should just be wide enough to push the copper into the rail under the track. Solder the wire to one end of the copper strip. Push the copper strip into the rail with the bent section first. The V shape will secure the strip in place and keep good contact to the rails. This will also allow you to easily remove the strip just by pulling it out so you can move it to another track peice if you decide to change your layout.

As for how many taps you need, on Carrera ttrack, I would put one every 25'.

FacPrime:
The RMS is fantastic. I've only tapped it's potential because its all in german, with no english instructions available yet. Carrera says english instruction book is coming. Im using the controllers that came with the RMS. They have phone jack ends, which plug into the Main Unit. I spliced them to make them longer and it worked great. No probs connected to the Trakmate, as I said, I just wish I had taken german in school.

Hi Hans!
Thanks for the answer. I also have RMS and like you I don't understand German. Hope Carrera will publish RMS instsuctions and their Race PC program in English soon. If you will be able to connect more power taps to RMS please let me know how you done it.
Thanks and good work,
Matevz from Slovenija

PS: Where do you come from?

Hans,

I have a power tap approximately every 20 feet on my layout. The new track is 81 feet in length and has 4 power taps. The instructions come with the track when you buy it from the Professor.

My new layout is going together as we speak. I should be up and running in a week or so and I will post pictures then. I am currently putting the finishing touches on the 10 by 20 foot table which is hung from the ceiling and raised and lowered with an electric winch. I will post pictures on that as well as soon as it is finished.

I can also say that Andy Smith, the Professor, was quite helpful in the planning of the power taps and track wiring. We communicated by e-mail as well as telephone and I highly recommend him.
