A while ago I wrote a couple of start light applications for Android, these were both conventional start lights and also a drag lights set.

Its an I/O board that you can connect your Android mobile phone to and then via an Android application you could run a race system.

I couldn't see anywhere that it tells you what I/O the board has, it doesn't say it supports Bluetooth. This could be a good low cost solution if you partner it with a low cost Android tablet.

Thanks for the reply, I haven't decided which way to go yet, the only thing that is a plus for microchip system is that it's all inclusive..it has push buttons and LED's on it for testing and comes with power supply.

Is there a daughter board that you can plug into the ioio board for prototyping?

Spoke to my boss today who has 3 PHD's(not sure what in), he's a wizard with electronics and has a good grasp of programming embedded systems...he is very keen to help me put together a low cost timing system and has already suggested an idea which will work on both analog and digital race systems. If it works which I can't think of any reason why it shouldn't it will be very good.

I won't say much about the actual timing method yet as I know it hasn't been done before and don't want to give the idea away. The actual timing leaderboard will be available on both Android and iPad platforms.

I just have to push push push now to get his help

Will have to discuss the idea further tomorrow, as from my research so far the bits alone make the idea prohibitive...unless we are on different wave lengths and he has a different cheaper solution.
