Recaptcha security signup problem

1502 Views 23 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  911TT
Hi,
One of our club members is trying to sign up to the Slotforum, but the recaptcha security is off line, so it won't let him complete the process. Can you help please?

It also won't let me email support, as you need to go through recaptcha for that too.

Thanks

Steve

How is it now sir.
They've had time to sort it.

Hi Bob, I checked again at 7.30 this morning and it still isn't working.

Steve
I won't begin to understand what the problem is, but two new members successfully joined the forum yesterday afternoon.

Has the IoM paid it's internet bill?

Ha ha, yes, we have definitely paid the interned bill.... usually 2 or 3 times the price that most of you guys have to pay!

That is weird though, if 2 people joined ok yesterday. I've been to the recaptcha help site and looked through their list of possible causes, without finding anything to help. I've also tried 2 different browsers on my laptop and my mobile phone, and I get the same error showing on all. Seems to be a bit difficult, and if other people are having the same problem they may just give up and not bother! Did you ever get a reply to your message Bob?

ok, so I've just been to the help area for 'website owners' on the reCAPTCHA help page and seen this:

************************************************************************************

Frequently asked questions

What happens to reCAPTCHA v1?

Any calls to the v1 API will not work after March 31, 2018. Starting in November 2017, a percentage of reCAPTCHA v1 traffic will begin to show a notice informing users that the old API will soon be retired.

Most websites around the world have already switched to reCAPTCHA v2, where humans pass effortlessly. With our advanced risk analysis engine, reCAPTCHA v2 can effectively separate humans from bots and always stay ahead of the attackers.

If your site still uses reCAPTCHA v1, please upgrade to reCAPTCHA v2 immediately. We no longer support reCAPTCHA v1. Any calls to the v1 API will not work after March 31, 2018. Please register a new key and upgrade to v2.

*************************************************************************************

Not sure how the other 2 people joined, but this looks like it could be the problem, starting from the 1st April, and there are probably lots of others who may have had the error too, but not been able to highlight it. From this it looks like the site admins need to upgrade to reCAPTCHA V2 from their current V1.

2nd email sent to VS.
Bob
I have just tried to create a new test account and encountered the same problem so how we gained new members virtually every day this week is beyond me!

It is within my power to turn the captcha thing off but I need to find out whether this will open the floodgates to the spammers before I will do it.

Any thoughts on that Jim?
Thats a good workaround Brian as VS have still not replied , we had Edward then Erik but who now.
Jim could end up in the chaos without captcha to help.
But we are losing those who cant sign up too.
Catch 22.

Hi

I would of thought danger in switching it off, bots will fly in

lowering security on the Internet sounds very bad.....

There is a back up to the captcha - a security question which has to be answered. We added that because the bots were evading the captcha so maybe it won't make any difference if we turn it off. More research needed first though.

It's not just this forum that has the Recaptcha issue at the moment.
Unless the recaptcha has been switched on since the last spammer attack, I don't think it will make any difference if it's switched off. Before the Q&A challenge was set, the spambots were rampant and then when they somehow got round the original question they flooded in again. The second question has since (touch wood) shut the door on them and I think that it would be an incredible coincidence if the recaptcha had been turned on and off and on again at the exact same times as the spammers were getting through.

Give it a try, Brian, and I'll holler if it suddenly lets the spammers through.

OK. The captcha has been removed and I have successfully created a new test account. Could you delete it from the validation queue please Jim?

911T Steve - get your friend to sign up quick in case the whole thing goes tits up and the spammers launch a mass bombing raid.

Hopefully you can see that the IoM user has got through now..... don't delete him whatever you do!
