Twice Indy 500 winner and all-time great Rodger Ward died today, age 83. He had contracted the terrible Alzheimer's disease and could not recognize anyone. I saw him last at the December gathering of the Fabulous Fifties in Los Angeles.
A sad end to a great racing career.
Ward was instrumental in convincing John Cooper to bring one of his F1 cars to Indy, thus sealing the fate of the front-engine dinosaurs. Later he organized flat-out races for high-power cars on high-speed roads in the Nevada desert.
Ward was a racer's racer, fighting all the way to the end.
