Excellent rice, considerings what's in the set, however need my pennies at the moment for the wireless controllers. Amazon also you Yodel, which are hopeless, also use camelcamelcamel to monitor Amazon prices as see if the set drops even lower in new year. Makes you wonder what the mark up is on these sets, because even at this price Amazon must be making a profit.

C7042 = £125
2x C7024 =£80
2x C7036 = £75

Thats about your £300

plus then free get 6 chips = £72
6 cars say £150
6 throttles £60
track, barriers etc

I think it was good value at £500, let alone £300. That can't be much above trade. Sometimes the big stores do sell stuff at ridiculous margins. I'll have 3...

QUOTE (bigbird @ 24 Dec 2011, 11:28) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>hi
at these prices i can see people buying them to break up and sell off what they dont want to get what they do want for free...

I can't believe people would do that sort of thing...

Hope I get amazon vouchers for christmas!

Cheers

I just got this Platinum set from Amazon for Christmas as initial set up. Although when I ordered it they had it on for £334.95 which I thought was an excellent price and then couldn't believe they dropped it even more to £300 the next day! Fair dues to Amazon when I emailed them they did refund the extra £34.95 that I had paid.
The set is amazing although we have already had the front grilles of the Audis come off and the spoiler off the Lamborghini ! Is there other layout design software out there, don't seem to get on very well with the Scalextric website one, which doesn't seem to work too good.

FYI...
My LHS is selling this set for ..... wait for it.... C$799

They had a 25% off sale last week but even so that seems a bit much.

This is also the selling price US$ 799 through www.scalextric-usa.com so quite pricey.

I am glad I got my track (albeit w/o the C7042) a couple of years ago as prices over here seem to have jumped quite a bit.
FYI, a CLC (C7007) was selling in the same store for .... C$59 and I saw the same piece in Washington state on the store shelf for US$ 25. Go figure.

Hope every one is happy with their Christmas purchases/gifts!
Cheers!

I was rather annoyed that I missed out on this set at such a great price, but Play.com are doing it for £334.99 and by going via quidco I've managed to get a whole 2% cashback too.

still not as good as £300 at Amazon but still a bargain I think

I just picked up one of these sets a few days ago. I paid $500 USD which is a little higher than the great £300 deal you found on Amazon. As I mentioned in a previous post, I picked up a SSD set second hand. It came with a bunch of cars, but only a handful of chips and a 4 car PB. The Platinum set was a cheap way to pickup the C7042 with two PSs, some extra XLCs, and a bunch of disposable cars. Many of the people running my track will be customers entertaining themselves while they wait for repairs to their "real car." Thus, I need a collection of cars that can be abused and not cost me a lot. These will do nicely!

Price increase from 300 to 470...Aww, looks like I royally missed the window of opportunity.
I guess we'll be seeing a LOT of split ups on ebay the coming weeks...

FYI, the C7042 WAS selling in the US for USD 149.99 last summer and is currently priced at USD 179.99. That is a USD 30 or a 20% increase in MSRP (manufacturer's suggested retail price). Does not seem to be coming down in price at the moment over here.

And don't remind me about the Canadian pricing for the APB. Seems that "close to par" with the USD does not matter... the MSRP locally is C$ 228.49 which is a mark up of about another 26% (with C$ 1 = USD 0.97 and C$ 1.58= GBP 1).

Enjoy your bargains!

Cheers!

Hi all, first post here... could be 'of many'..

I've not played scalextric for 35+ years
since I had one as a child..
And I've not really looked at them since too much.. But now I have a young son it seemed a good time to look again..

We actually bought a small 'micro' set for Christmas - but one car quickly broke and wouldn't work any more. Took it back and they didn't have a replacement. I wasn't too disappointed to be honest because, although it was good fun, I realised it couldn't compete with the proper track etc.
So I started looking and stumbled on the Play price of £335 for the Platinum set. This was more than we were thinking of paying - but when I looked at what was in the box it seemed fantastic value for money... Anyway, I then saw the Amazon price of £300
but it had finished and was up to £466 again. I 'ummed' and 'aahed' over the Play price and then it disappeared and is no longer for sale there.

Amazon price seems to have dropped today to £399...
My question is, for anyone who may know, is was the £300 - £335 pretty much a one-off and it is normally £399+? Is the lower price likely to re-appear? I appreciate nobody has a crystal ball but if someone knows this wasn't the first time it's been at such a price then obviously there's more hope of a repeat..

I really couldn't justify £399 as a 'first set' at the minute..
I didn't appreciate seeing the sets for sale on ebay from new sellers - as 'unwanted Christmas presents'. Come on, gimme a break..

Thanks all,

Steve
