I guess I'm trying a few things out on this Scalextric Jaguar XJR9 which I picked up for a couple of pounds on ebay.
Some of the things (like painting) will be good practice (if nothing else) for some kit slot.it jags i've got.
Some of the other things will be good practice for a few cars from when I was a kid I'd like to restore (the Scalextric Escort xr3i from the set Night Stages i think, a Datsun 260 Bison Computers, and a Fina Porsche C125a by the looks of it)

Have a few (probably very simple) questions.

The Jag XJR9 was in a right old state, with nothing soldered inside, and the outside a real mess too. Paint job we'll put down to plenty of racing fun:

I stripped the paint off using Dettol (as described in other threads)

As mentioned nothing was connected inside, just a bunch of wires and the motor

Plus this:

Which I have no idea what it is, but guess it might be something to do with the lights? Although there are no lights in the car? Any ideas?

The Dettol did the trick with the paint, but I would endorse those who say about the smell/gloves etc. It really does stink

Initially thought I'd use Halfords Car Primer but its quite powdery and I made a right mess of it. Back in the Dettol and decided to undercoat it with a spray can of Citadel Black undercoat, which I've used before and got a fairly decent result.

I'll post some more pics of where it's at now, but have a couple of questions at this point:
I'm going to replace the motor but how do I know what would be a good replacement?
I'm also going to replace the guide I think, and install some lights?
The tyres seem fine, but the wheels need replacing, any suggestions? Will use the old tyres for some scenery I think

Also, the pinion on the motor is 9 bits/spokes (whats the proper word?), I've tried counting the number of things on the gear, its a black S9536 i'm going to guess 27?

That's it for now (more pics later) and thanks in advance for any hints/tips/info/advice
Cheers

Hi,

they have something,,to do with light.....

those things are named.
"" condisators" (dont know if I named them correctly)

they where used to get the car a permanent light on the car

for example some of the Fly cars have them too.
with some full speed on the trigger they fill the bateries,
(those blue cans) and whernn you go out of the track,
the lights still burn for a few seconds...

Yes they are capacitors. No they were not for permanent lighting.

This car brought in the first Scalextric system with brake lights and were launched in catalogue 29 as "world sports champions"

the bits on the pinion and gears are teeth. they give you the gear ratio, 27 divided by 9 = 3 hence 3-1 ratio. john

went off to get some paint today, came back with Humbrol Brunswick Green which seems a good match for british racing green. Im thinking gold detailing/logos, and think it will work well

this is where i was at from the last session

masking up with the tamiya tape even on something quite easy like the cockpit was (for a first attempt ever) quite fiddly, but i reasoned i could touch up the black if there was an spillage from the spraying (the gap in the middle is a hole thru to the inside of the body)

and then to to the spraying!

Definitely learnt some things here, the finish is ok but i raced through the can of paint (was obviously overspraying by quite a high factor)
Didnt have enough left to finish the spoiler or wing mirrors (not too worried about the wingmirrors as they may well end up gold too)

the windscreen has been in the dettol overnight, the white and the red stripe with Jaguar on it have come off well, and i managed not to remove the wiper which was a bonus

now to finish the spoiler, decide about the wing mirrors, and get to the logos (oh and wheels, tyres, motor, lights....)

thanks for all the info and advice so far

hi
as Riko said cracking finish grommet.. Lights are a must have in these le man type sports cars and installing the blue cans to allow both tail and brake lights would be fantastic to have for those dark nights of winter racing.

cheers, more luck than judgement re the lack of dust

and you cant see the not so great part on the far side (which i think i can fix tomorrow)
spent some time today getting ideas for decals etc, and am really happy with how its turning out. so much knowledge to be gleaned from these pages for which I'm very thankful.
and i'm definitely swaying towards having the lights as they were originally, thanks for the feedback/advice/info on that

so today i ordered some decal paper, exciting!
also did a quick respray to the far side that wasnt shown in pics above, also painted the spoiler

and apparently did a shoddy job of not masking far enough or spraying a wider area than anticapted and got this

and this

this doesnt look so bad unless the light catches the slight ridge in just the right (wrong) place, any suggestions? they arent massively noticeable from any kind of distance.
thanks
Robin

Is that like Dettol Dettol? The antiseptic stuff? Better be more careful with that in the future, if it can strip tampo's then what else will it do?...
