I've had my Scalex Lotus for a few weeks but only just checked it for scale accuracy this morning.

All credit to Scalex for getting it spot on in every measurement, design and contour. It may not look like they are exactly the same size in my photo but that is the camera lens distorting things, to the eye they match. I won't talk about the driver figure again...

I started this jelutong carving years ago and it is still not finished but it also matches the Scalex version for size although Scalex have the nice taper to the plan view of the bodywork which I didn't achieve partly due to me wanting an extra mm width at the motor mount area at the rear of the car and partly because I don't have the carving skills of the Scalex model-makers.

In the 60s the full size car makers had their 1:1 scale models made from jeluting.

When I was a Student Apprentice at Pressed Steel they sent me to the Model Shop for amonth for experience, and they expected me to carve patterns and model parts to an accuracy of a thou!!!!!

I eventually I did the model of the reinforcement bracket at the base of the Triumph 2000 Estate's B-C post to the required accuracy but it took me about six attempts.

It's lovely wood to work with, but I didn't know that it was generally available, I can see the attraction of it for models like ours.

jelutong is an Australian wood and I was told by a local wood specialist that due to the fires in Australia , they are not exporting it any more so its quitter rare over here

I had a look at my scalex lotus25 and would make the following comments ,driver ,not happy with and may change mine for a super shells " Jim clark" I have heard folk criticise thescreen as not being the airflow type , but I believe that for the Italian gp team swapped back to the old type screen in an attempt to eke a little more straight line speed in the fast Monza track ( no chicanes in those days ) also I don't think the gearbox is quite right seems too short to me. but overall I am quite pleased with it

Thanks for the answers lads.
Its a real shame what's happening in Australia.
We sent 70 of our forest fire fighting crew down there to help out.
Just hope things get under control soon.

I will look for something else to test my carving on.
Cheers

Received one as a present and need a bit of advice mine has a binding front axle and to much slop across the front axle , i think the binding is in that plastic disc brake area , now are these axles knurled as i don't fancy taking the front wheels of if they are those wheels look very flimsy.
