I did about four laps and since it wasn't my car..., sorry, bike I was taking it easy. The simple fact is it ran easily and did not look like falling over and did not de-slot. The noise is a bit odd, but it is with the old sidecars too. I only gave it a couple of squirts and I have to say it shifted down the straight fast enough.

To race? Well, you can race anything against itself so I see no problem there. Apart from Ninco McLarens just about every other type of car we race suffers from de-slot under pressure so I don't think you'll be able to hold that against the bikes if it happens. In fact, the biggest racing issue might be tangling "outriggers".

Finally, I'm not a MotoGP fan but it looked okay going around corners.

Whatever, remember, they are just toy cars...er, sorry, bikes!

QUOTE that these are the ultimate and ideal machine for club racing and for a race series.

Read that back to yourself Moped. Do you read what I read? Opinion passed on as fact? Yup, same here...

QUOTE That is possibly why some club racers are scared of these. They present too much of a driver challenge!

Are you trying to goad us into buying them? Has Hornby hired you as a PR man? If so, they might want to consider someone with a little more credibility on the forum. I don't know if anyone takes you seriously anymore, Moped. Ever heard of the boy who cried wolf? When (I mean IF) Hornby ever make a decent car (or bike, or camel), you'll tell us all that it's great, and no-one will buy it!

Sort it out, I'm fed up of seeing all this when I'm trying to read sensible threads.

Managed to have a quick run on Jexy's bike last night too.

I have to be honest, no where near as bad as some forum posts may have you believe, they are pretty nippy, also negotiated non banked bends without any drama, just slower than some cars - once you get used to the idea, no problem!

At the risk of sounding like a stuck record, they do look great better than in photograph's probably because they are smaller than anticipated too.

Scalextric blow other manufacturers away with the quality of tampo printing. For instance, comparing the Rossi bike to another recent release - the Revell Greenwood Corvette, No competition. Scalextric wins hands down. Virtually all the nooks and cranny's are tampo'd, none have any gaps, intricate tampo design & bright colours, very impressive.

Whilst Ecurrie Ecosse was scooting around the club track, what immediately struck me was the noise of the 'outrigger' rubbing on Ninco track, obviously this is inevitable, it just sounds odd but quickly forgotten.

Moped made a point about smooth track; bikes certainly exasperate warped sections, highlighting any bump by wobbling, which looks rather odd on a straight. Again Carrera & new track owners could possibly rejoice.

I like them, mind you will have to get into the habit of picking the bike up from the bikes fairing rather than the rider! The rider comes detached quite easily as it's only a mild magnet.

Right...Where's my harp gone? I could have sworn I'd seen one in the house somewhere! Oh... sorry, it's printed on the side of my can of Guinness!!
Anyway, Would I be right in thinking that most of the people contributing to this forum do so because they like seeing small replicas of their favourite vehicles travelling in quite a realistic manner around a track? Part of the enjoyment of slot racing IMHO is the way the cars have to be driven around the track - too much power in a corner and the car will slide it's back end out. Very much like it's 1:1 prototype (1:1 fwd configurations excepted). For this reason I'd like to see the model motorcycle corner realistically - yes, even in the heat of actual competition against one's fellow racers, the bikes should lean.

However, this would not make me scared to race the Scaley bikes, but I would not be buying one. After all, I've driven the Slot Tech Party Wagon on a few tracks now, so I'm not afraid of any slot vehicle

Hmm.. outriggers scraping on the track, eh? First MotoGP tuning mod!! Put little wheels/ roller bearings on the corners to reduce the friction

The scope for tuning these bikes is tremendous, and almost tempting me! Judicious use of weights and magnets, I like diff's friction saving measures on the outriggers. There is lightening the rider possibilities (hollowing the guy out, replacing him with an expanded polystyrene figure?) tyre treatments on the rear drive wheel, and does it help to nail varnish the front tyre, or remove it completely?

I guess bikes will be the tuners dream, especially when ppl start coming up with individual solutions to leaning

OK, so..

back on track -

From track to top of riders head - whats the height please?

My son is gagging for one of these but I need to know he is not going to decapitate the rider first lap.

Cheers!

I seem to recall that our most rabid Scaley proponent posted a figure of 58 or 59mm, somewhere. I can't find it to check and it might have been on another board. Probaby better to treat with a pinch of salt and have someone actually measure it reliably.

Hello Europe America calling,

The height to the top of the riders helmet is about 83 mm.

Someone mentioned here about the bikes being different. The chassis are the same the fairing on the Ducati is shorter and this places the magnet further forward.
Stock the Honda is easier to drive, although both ride much better with weight added to the outriggers. More visually appealing to my eye as well as you can make the bike slide both entering and exiting the corners.
The Honda seems to work best with about 1/2 an oz on each skid and the Ducati hooks up better if you also add about 1/4 oz under the bike. This slows down acceleration but dramatically improves lap times, and in my mind enjoyment of the product.
More video up on my site if anyone wants to look, I will not Spam Slot Forum with Web addresses as I feel that is bad form.

Also tried the magnet route, but felt it did not really help the look of riding the Moto GP Bikes, they stuck straight to the rail until pushed hard enough the outrigger would lift out the guide then look out. No sliding, which the real guys do, so I felt it better to weight and see what happened. Pun intended.

How's the weather back home, nice and sunny here in Washington, but it will probably rain in a minute.

Cheers

Hi all just read your comments on the GP bikes. Scalextric will be releasing special banked curves later in the year to give the impression that the bikes will lean.

They will be in race sets when released before general release as a single track section.

The bikes are also available and in stock to order Ultimate-32.com

Also some commented that the bikes will be short lived. In that case get collecting as these will be collectable in the future, especially complete with no bits missing.

Cheers Alan (Scake Racing) and thanks for the post - you're welcome here anytime!

Lots off good info there from the guy who actually ran the bikes and posted the vids.

While I am certain that, given the source, the number will be correct, 83mm does sound quite high -
83 x 18 (scale) divided by 25.4 gives 59 inches.
Pretty close to 5 feet.
Does that sound a bit tall for a crouching rider?
No matter - they LOOK pretty good!

Had me worried Tropi so I re measured 83 to top of helmet. Bike is 111mm long and 42mm wide (tip of Handlebars). Skid is 66mm wide and 53 mm to top of tank.

Hope these numbers help, now back to video work.

A quick comment on the Bikes, I do not feel they will be short lived, Hornby(Scalextric) intends to continue developement of these models, and are aware they can perform better with weight added.
As an ex Bike Racer I certainly hope they are successful as it will bring a completely new crowd to Model Racing, and some of them will surely cross over to Cars as well.

With the current set up I have on the bike, I feel, anyone can enjoy them, they don't lean, but they slide like crazy.

Cheers

Alan

If you are interested check out the video of my 7 year old daughter driving and commenting on the Bikes. I feel her opinion is more important than mine.

LOL @ Scale Racing!

I really and truly would never doubt your measurements, Alan - I KNOW you do things properly.
I was just a little surprised at the calculated height based on 1/18 scale and avoiding mentioning the possibility that they might not actually be quite 1/18 scale!!!
You know what these things can turn into on a lively discussion board!!!

Fact is, as there is absolutely NOTHING for these bikes to be compared with, scalewise - at least on a slot track, then the exactness of scale surely can't matter a flying figleaf?
God, I hope not!

Ninco Karts?

Which are also unlike any other slot car. SCX and Fly trucks too, all good fun raced against each other.

I'll probably buy one at Liphook this Sunday. Who is the famous rider again....?

there not the right scale, I aint getting one.

nah cant see any appeal whatso ever, they looked a bit poor tbh when i saw them, unless they miracously lean and can perform wheelies and other stuff that bike do then I might buy one but from what I here they appear to be crap out the box, kinda like pink kars?

First (and last) time I raced Ninco carts was on the Farnham track. They were fun. I'm sure with the marketing capacity of Scalextric there will soon be many slot-racers with theses bikes and - with underpasses allowing - there are bound to be class races set up.

Mine should be here any time. It will probably go straight from the box to the shelf above my desk!!! Seriously though with a banked track or better yet a large commecial track they wold probably look fine; assuming they are fast enough not be too boring on a commercial track???? If fast enough I could see them being very popular with kids @ the commercial tracks.
