Hello Stu, I just bought one of these and it is "digital ready" for the SCX Advance system where the front wheels are independent (and don't touch the track). I think that the earlier cars have solid front axles.
The one I got is #19 Michelle Mouton. Cannot swear to it but I think the tell-tale difference between early and late is that the later cars have bright shiny chrome bumpers.
Not sure if the later cars will suit your plan.
