hi all, just a quick question,
on my track i have a pitlane, so obviously i have 2 stretches of single lane track on the entry and the exit..
now when i fix them together next to the pitlane piece, the 3 single lane track pieces are a good 3mm to 4mm shorter when connected, compared to the length of the pit lane section...this really bothers me seeing oversized gaps, does anyone else have this problem, surely they should be 175mm not 173.8mm

i have 3 gaps like this when evened out, otherwise i get 1 huge gap

Yeah only noticed the different lenght in some track when using the single lane straights in conjunction with the pit lane entry and exit pieces. I didnt buy any single lane straights, I cut some full/half straights down the guts using a Stanley knife and only noticed the difference in length when putting the lot together. Easiest fix was to find a full/half straight the length I wanted and cut that up. The track is really easy to cut with a sharp blade, just make sure you cut it down the middle of the rib which runs down the underside of the track piece (I think this rib is only 1-2mm thick), easiest way to correct the difference in lengths.

This is not only a problem with Scalextric. When buiding my Carrera permanent layout I found length differences in track parts and also borders. Some of these problems were solved by selecting parts to obtain a good fit, others I cut/filed (easy with borders, more difficult for track), and the worst offenders were discarded and I bought new. Some sections also varied in thickness and needed packing underneath to ensure level track joints. However, there was also a noticeable variation in track surface texture between batches of sections and to avoid too much of a patchwork quilt appearance I had to group similar surfaces together as best I could, and again discarded some and purchased more to keep the differences to a minimum.

I suppose we should not expect too much accuracy in a product which is intended to be a cheaply manufactured childrens' toy?

Jeff.
