Hi everyone,

I am a postgraduate student at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh. I am currently doing a research for my master thesis related to Slot car market.

I would like to launch the following questions:

How do you get information about new product related to Slot cars?? Where do you usually buy slot cars and parts?

It would be very helpful if you could answer these questions for my research.

Also, I am working in my master thesis with a Spanish company that is introducing a new slot car product supported by SCX. The product is based on a Universal Chassis to adapt 1:43 scale cars to slot.

I think it's very interesting, you can check it out on the website:

www.tecno-slot.com

I would appreciate your opinions about it.

Thank you very much for your help

Hi Mireia, I get information about new products from 2 sources: This forum, and email newsletters from retailers, specifically MRE and Get Slotted. I generally buy cars from ebay retailers, sometimes from other retailers (Pendle, Top Slots & Trains) depending on price. If a car or part is hard to find, a google search often flags up stock from some more obscure retailers.
The 1:43 market seems to me to have great potential - I'd be interested in moving over to 1:43 if more cars & parts were available - it would allow me to fit a bigger layout into my space, and I think scenery options would be greater.
Hope this helps,
Stuart

Mireia,

Hi, your just doun the road at Heriot, I am a wee bit north of you. Pretty much the same as HunttheShunt, I check-out a few websites each day and pick up skuttlebut from all sources on the Web. I live in a fairly remote Highland village so all my purchases are mail-order or Ebay. My nearest retailer is more than 1 hour away or >60 miles/100km I am pretty active over on SCXWW, the website for SCX cars and I have a car racing in the SCX Classic Rally Proxy [Escort Mk2 British Airways #50, "Highlander"]..., I will take a look at the site you have linked and post again. Currently, I am most interested in the Kyosho D-Slot143 range in this sector which should make the market late this year. In terms of research for your masters, you should look at what happened with HPi Racings Slot Car launch, I have always said it should be the subject of a thesis on "what NOT to do in business/marketing"!!!!

Hello Mireia, to answer your questions:

I get all of my information about new products on this forum and other forums from around the world.

I buy slot car parts on line from America.

BUT, if you had asked the question 'Where do you usually buy 1/43 slot cars and parts?' you would get a very few replies as the 1/43 slot car hobby is virtually non existant in the UK. Yes a few Carrera GO sets are sold here, but to the market they are aimed at, CHILDRENS TOYS!

I model only in 1/43 and have 3 choices when it comes to new models for my rally track:

Adapt a toy chassis, buy one from Ranch Design or make my own, the latter being the most practical and cost effective.

I do, of course know of the PSK and, latterly, the Techno Slot chassis, as I have seen them on forums, but the cost, especially as they have to be bought from Spain or other European countries, outweighs any advantages.

Another point is that both of these companies seem to be marketing their chassis as being suitable for motorizing diecast model cars, something as a modeller I am less than convinced by. The aim when making a good slot car is to have the weight as low as possible, not the other way round!

I think that 1/43 is an ideal home racing and modelling scale but, with 1/32 and HO being so well established in the UK, I cant see it ever gaining much popularity here, even with the much lauded Kyosho cars coming soon.

Regards, Lloyd

like lloyd i´m one of the few who actually uses 1:43, i prefer the scale but the chassis available are basically limited to scx compact. i usually buy the mercedes cars and cut down the chassis (it appears to be the easiest to doctor), i really would appreciate a decent motor on the universal chassis, take into account that if its for powering relatively high weight diecast, then more power is necesary, and also driveabilty. unlike lloyd i think the extra weight of the meatl cars adds to the driving sensation, otherwise they are too light and fast, but as i said, the underpowered motors make for a bit of a stop and go throttle control, (compared to the bigger 1:32 stuff)
i would be interested in the nice looking universal chassis, can you tell us the price?) as i´m a bit sick of massive amounts of epoxy glue botching up the undersides of the cars
i´m in spain, and havent seen this product yet, is it in the shops yet?

cheers sig

(ps you can see some of the diecast botch jobs in the later pages of the mexican airfeild thread.)
