Slot Car Reviews

Where did all the slot car reviews go? did we lose them in the big forum update? There used to be loads of them on a page ordered by year, but other than hunting them down in various sections using key words I'm struggling to find them. Is there an easy link?

Cheers,

Richard

Also, how do people feel about reviews, as they used to be a regular feature when I first found Slotforum?

Do we want them?

Are they read and enjoyed/appreciated?

Would anyone else be up for writing/posting brief reviews of slot cars?

Personally really enjoyed the reviews, good steer on number of purchases over the years.
Hope they can continue and we can access the old reviews.

I miss them as well but there were never enough pictures; it's the insides and layout of a vehicle interest me most. This is down to how I might approach digitising it so I stop reading it when a review gets too detailed or tries too hard.
The good reviews are very well worth reading.
By good reviews I mean
Tell us the good points AND the not quite so good points. Totally uncritical reviews are correct for perfect products, but I doubt there's any such thing as a perfect product. Uncritically reiterating a manufacturer's claims isn't good, a review should give an independent view of how good it is.
Tell us how a cars goes as well as what it looks like. Tell us how it was tested, for example some cars a good on magnetic track and not good on non-magnetic ones.
Just saying it goes well isn't much use, saying how it compares with other cars is much more informative.

It's been a pleasure to read the reviews that did all that. Sadly some reviews did fell rather short....

Reviews of other slot racing products would be good too, there are many threads asking about controllers, motors etc.

Yes, they were lost with the upgrade. We've reported it to the forum owners, but they're no help. They can be found on this web archive though: LINK

Apart from which, the last review was in 2012 so they are all rather out of date with a lot of the cars featured unavailable for many years.

It is also worth pointing out that most of the the cars were provided by the manufacturers/distributors FOC for review. This sort of generosity/marketing practice is long gone and I know of no current manufacturer who does it.

Having said all that there is no reason why people shouldn't write reviews of cars thay have purchased. I can always set up a review subforum if there is sufficient demand.
Hmm not sure about reviews i suppose it comes down to a lot of personal choices likes and dislikes in certain slot car manufacturers , also the price and what sort of price range a certain car should be in, e.g Carrera make some really nice bodies but the mechanics are so dissapointing in comparison , but the price is at the lower end of a purchase so do you have to allow for that , in the same way the new Thunderslot Lola T70 Spyders i bought are at the top end of price but are they worth that when the Lola T70 Coupe is basically the same but £20 or so cheaper so my review would show as much as i wanted the Spyder on reflection are they worth that sort of money and realistically no would be my answer if i reviewed it after owning one for a few days, and those examples are just that a example could review slot cars but these days don't buy many to do a review justice

Personally I'd like that Brian, I've still got the text and photos of the ones I did a couple of years back for the Ninco E type, Scalextric Delta S4 and the Quattro/Metro 6R4/RS200 roup B box set years ago so could re post faitly easily.
I think out of production cars are still relevant as many of us buy used/ new old stock cars to use. I've couple of new reviews here to get the ball rolling too.
A review subforum would be quite good. Somewhere you can go into more detail about your new purchases (rather than the "new purchases thread", clogging it up), specifically for current products. It'd need a good standard title format though, to make it easily searchable.

"<Slot car manufacturer> <Part number> <Make> <Model>"

"Scalextric C3982 McLaren 720S"
I like reviews, I need them before deciding if a car is any good or not.

What I look for in a review:

  • Quality of parts, especially body and chassis.
  • Drivetrain - motor and gears - good/bad?
  • Ease of tuning for standard class type racing.
  • Ease of tuning for modified class type racing.
  • Dimensions - maximum overall width especially as this is the limiting factor in a lot of our clubs racing.

What I don't look for in a review:

  • Performance straight out of the box - irrelevant info as I never race a car before it's ready to be raced.
  • Scale accuracy - I'm a racer and accept that 100% scale isn't possible.
  • Nit picking

I'd prefer to see reviews split into Racing or Collecting.
