Sunday 10th July saw the first (of many hopefully) MrD Bracket Racing Bonanza slot drags event, held at the Sturdee Club in Hoo, regular haunt of the MrC Raceway. There were 19 racers taking part in the event, many entering two cars, to double their chances of winning!!!

We started off with an hour and half practice and qualifying, with Jon Sutherland from MrC top qualifier with a 0.006 reaction time. He was closely followed by Vaughan Andrews with a 0.011 and Peter Johnson with a 0.015. After a short break, while the 32 car field elimination chart was prepared, the racing began.

Peter and Mike setting some qualifying times

Teasing Mark Bubb that his car was illegal due to front wheels not showing

There was a surprise 1st round exit for both yours truly cars, beaten by Vaughan and Ric, with Ric using one of my own cars. Unfortunately both youngsters, Owen and Chloe, met each other in the 1st round, with Chloe taking the win in a close 3 race dual. Sarah did the dirty on top qualifier Jon beating him over 3 races and Debs took out high qualifier Peter Johnson with her trusty Austin slow racer.

Peter and June Johnson show off their G20 motor Parma Edge cars

In the 2nd round father and son Paul and Ryan were pitched together with Paul, unusually beating Ryan for a place in the quarter finals. My Son Matt got beaten by a Bed in this round also, tut tut!! Ryan also lost out to Ric with his second car in this round (at least one of my cars made it to the quarter finals).

Nic and Terry, Terry with his infamous Bed based on a Parma Edge chassis

Matt D's Golf and Mark Bubb's G20 funny car

In the 1st quarter final race it was the two MrC ladies meeting up, with Debs taking the victory over Sarah. 2nd pairing saw Mike Tolley beaten in two by Paul Avis, who seemed to be on a roll with his beaten up old car. It had actually smashed against the end wall in the 1st race of the 2nd round and had hastily been patched up to continue. 3rd pairing saw Vaughan take on Ric, unfortunately Ric was on the losing end after taking the 1st. Last pairing was Tony Mills up against Mark Bubb, both racers running .68's and .701's, Tony winning 2 nil.

Alex and Vaughan have built these lovely slingshots

The Avis pit area

So it was Debs, Paul, Vaughan and Tony for the semi's. First up was Tony versus Vaughan, Tony taking the win with two very close to dial-in two .66 runs. Next Paul and Debs, Debs took the first race but Paul came back with two close to dial-in runs of his own, a .898 and a .907. Paul also posted a perfect reaction of 0.000 in one the races with Debs, well done that man!!!

Two Parma Edge cars ready to race

Peter Johnson and Mike Tolley do battle

In the third place run-off it would be Debs and Vaughan, with Vaughan running two close to dial-in .93's to take the runner-up place. And so, after a long afternoon racing it was the final, Tony Mills versus Paul Avis. Tony took the first race, he then let the controller slip handing Paul the second race, was this nail biting or what. One a piece, last race of the event and opps Tony popped a cherry on the tree hoping to beat Paul to line. The red light handing the win to Paul.

Vaughan Andrews took the third place run-off

Tony Mills second place winner

Paul Avis taking the honours, 1st place

The winners and their trophies

For me it was a great afternoon's racing, we had a couple of smashes, some very close racing and a worthy winner. I'd managed to get a couple of trophies sorted together with some celebratory drink for the winners, which I hope went down well guys!!

I''d just like to say well done to everyone who turned up and thank you for your support.

Here is a link to some video by June & Peter Johnson, thanks for sharing.
