Some sideways cheer

Messing about with Seventies saloon cars, as I mostly am, and being presented with a 'lovely' (ahem!) Scalextric Aston V8 racer, as I was this weekend, got me to thinking about Gerry Marshall.

He was a hero to us as nippers, and many times it fell to my mum to encourage him towards the door of the Silverstone Racing Club when everyone wanted to go home to bed. Gerry preferred to hold court in the clubhouse with the enthusiasts and his muckers, rather than being in the BRDC suite, and although he was usually nine sheets to the wind by closing time, when mum said the bar was shut he'd trot off without a cross word.

Anyway, such thoughts led to this slice of pure genius from the big man's heyday. The in-car stuff and the ludicrous Capri driving in the Brands finale is awesome entertainment. Enjoy!

"Well if they've paved it then clearly it's meant to be driven on - asphalt's not cheap y'know!"

Track limits and an angry Capri driver getting his retaliation in. 😬

You're welcome. It's a joyful thing! Said angry driver was no less than Tom Walkinshaw, savaging Gordon Spice. Found this close-up the other day...

Walkinshaw was also deemed responsible for Gerry Marshall's near career/life-ending accident at Silverstone later on. Not only did Gerry's helmet end up in the middle of the track (still done up), but while he recuperated the deal that he was making to run the Rovers for BL went away, and would eventually go to TWR.

Someone asked Gerry's son Gregor whether words had been exchanged about it. "No, Dad seemed to think that if he was close enough to talk to then he was close enough to punch, so Tom generally kept his distance!"
