Something Different on Short Ovals

Idly browsing YouTube the other day, I happened across yet another genre of motorsport of which I've been woefully ignorant up to now. Hot rods, as practiced in the Republic of Ireland. The link is for the All Ireland Finals of 1988, but the channel has more.

Don't ask me what's going on. Dodgy VHS sound quality and a rather excitable commentator put paid to that. The action's fun and interesting, though. It's more akin to autograss, than hot rods as practiced in mainland Britain and NI, but none the worse for that. Intriguing machinery too, with whole classes of Fiat 127s (so that's where they all went) and Beetles, with a sprinkling of rwd saloons from Ford and the Japanese manufacturers.

Well worth a watch for anyone into grass roots racing, IMHO.

Have seen similar racing here in the UK in the dim and distant past. I think that is was billed as "Grass Track Racing" . One event near Clyst St Mary, just outside of Exeter raced just 4 cars at a time, with a pair of cars starting, then after a short pause a second pair of cars being allowed to give chase, A car that stuck in my mind from that event was a Hillman Imp bodied creation that had a Mini subframe and motor at the front, while retaining the Imp motor at the rear. When it went it went well, but suffered a number of mechanical problems during the day. The other event I remember was held at Gosford near Ottery St Mary, East Devon. and was more in the style of the event shown in the video.. Both of these events would have been roundabout 1974.

Britain's 'Mr Autocross', Laurie Manifold, won the British National Championship year after year in the 1960s with sundry Beetles, which doubled as his everyday car during the working week.

Manifold is an unusual surname. It's taken from the Manifold Valley in Shropshire. Laurie Manifold was an interesting chap. Not only very successful in Autocross, he was also deputy ed of The News of the World. As a journo he specialised in crime and interviewed all the infamous villains of his day.

Lots of wonderful stories about him but, alas, too long to relate here.

Cripes - a Lotus doing Autocross! The Esprit my mate owned had bits fall off it whilst stationary in the garage.

I wonder what happened to the Capri? Does it still exist?

Speaking of unlikely, I was watching some old footage of Spedeworth's super rods from the late 70s, and what should be running, amongst (well, behind really) the 3l Capris and Mk2 Jags, but a Mk4 Zephyr. I cannot think of anything less suitable for manhandling around a crowded 1/4 mile oval.
