The brand new SRC Olympia Rallye 1972 BMW 2.8 CS is now available as a kit.
It is the works car of Rauno Aaltonen and John Davenport, who had to retire on the 32nd of a total of 67 special stages with a defective head gasket.
The 3,500-kilometer event took place from 13 to 19 August 1972. It started in Kiel, a city in the north of Germany, and finished in the south, in Munich, a week before the Olympic Games.

The 17000 rpm SRC M3 motor is positioned as an inliner in a separately sprung pod.
The spring-loaded guide is positioned as far forward as possible in front of the car, which makes it very stable.
The front axle can be adjusted with four grub screws; two on each side at the bottom of the front axle and two at the top.

Thanks to the Lexan interior, the weight remains just under 80 grams.
Here are a few pictures of the build process and the car ready to go:

Nice kit, beautiful model, pleasant livery, perfect execution. One of the best cars I've ever driven, and much more rewarding than the 6-series that replaced it. I imagine this model is going to be popular - and rightly.

I am excited by this car - and let's not forget, I don't like Beemers - but the price, for a white kit, strikes me as borderline prohibitive. 😱

Still, you can't argue that you don't get a lotta decal for ya money!

I will await the first finished and ready to run car whose livery tickles m' taste buds.
borderline prohibitive is not quite prohibitive...did you get your order in?

Which is to say, very clearly I would argue, that I have not bothered with this kit.

Very nice Hub, though I will purchase a ready to run one when they come out. I've found SRC to be excellant when ordering direct from them as well.

More excellent photographs of a superb slot car, Hub. The last great BMW?
Hi Trisha,
I would say, one of the last great BMWs. I also like the M3 in Group A rally trim from the '80s.
But I agree with you. The styling of the E9 is superb and much better than its successor, the bigger and heavier E24 600-series.
As a rally fan, I continue to regret that BMW stopped rallying from 1974.
Works drivers such as Achim Warmbold and Björn Waldegard could have been very successful in the WRC with a further developed version of the 2002.
Here in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, the 2002 was very popular with private drivers in the 1970s because it was a reliable and powerful car.

That's a very nice build complimented by superb photos. Another fine looking car from SRC, I do enjoy searching their website especially for the bargains they have in clearance and scrap offers.
