stripping...

i need to strip this back top a clean , bare , shell.

and after spending about 10 hours stripping a fully enamelled mk1 escort with cellulose thinners, a stanley blade and my heart in my mouth , i fancied doing this one the easy way! acetone free nail polish remover seems to keep coming up as the weapon of choice but after perusing ladies supplies in tescos whilst trying not to look like a 14 year old buying condoms for the first time , it seems to loosen the enamel ok but i was a little "miffed" to find that it seems to soften the plastic more than celly thinners did. any ideas or tips slotters?

Dettol - if you go straight from dettol to water, the old paint forms a sticky stretchable gunk which is a bugger to shift (which is why Billy says don't do it) but you can immediately drop the piece straight into another jam jar full of diluted washing-up liquid water for 10 minutes after which it can be easily rinsed under the tap.

I've left hard plastic (i.e. injection moulded styrene) in Dettol for weeks at a time with no adverse effects.

That's more than a little bit concerning. As it happens I am stripping the paint off some white metal wargames figures at the moment which have a few hard styrene plastic components (bases, shields etc.) and am seeing no problem with them. I did buy the Dettol about a year ago though.

As I need some more Dettol, I'll try and remember to photograph and post the bottle I use (to make sure everyone is on the right page as to what we are talking about) and see if I have some scrap bodyshells to test it out on.

Further to this if you aren't having warping problems and are still OK with Dettol then this is your new best friend.

Cif Bathroom Mousse. Spray it on the piece straight out of the Dettol, leave for five minutes and you can start stripping with the toothbrush under the tap/faucet without it going black and gunky. Also means your fingers won't stink of Dettol which is a bonus. Apparently cleans bathrooms as well...
