A new and long overdue build started today in the shape of the Matchbox D-Type, which was the final incarnation of the Auto-Union before the outbreak of War in 1939. With its 3-litre supercharged V12, and revised spec, those who've driven these cars in more recent times say that they feel very modern, and easy to drive.

It was designed principally by Porsche staffer, Prof Robert Eberan von Eberhorst, the man who invented/discovered 'ground-effect' aerodynamics. There were several works' drivers including HP Muller, Hans Stuck, and Schorsch Meier, but Tazio Nuvolari shone above 'em all.

As usual, your contributions ( of all sorts) will be most welcome, and fun to absorb, so my grateful thanks in advance.

I’m sure I’ve droned on before about how my grandfather regaled me with tales of those days of daring do ❤

I look forward to seeing the finished article, Laurence, and hope to make my own one day.
