THINGIES!

Maybe these days with just about every dream car you can think of available as an RTR or kit from some manufacturer or other, is it time we revived the Thingie?

I know they almost tore the hobby apart back in the old days, but I must admit to a high degree of admiration for those imaginative souls who designed wholly orginal shapes for slot cars. What would be the perfect shape for a slot car these days, if all prototypical accuracy was ignored?
Lets carve some wild cars, suck some zombies in those home-made vac-formers, get the creative juices flowing into some wild shapes and bizarre colour schemes!

Back then, I seem to remember some pretty serious real car designers threw up some shapes for commercial track slot-racers. Why not try it again now, when the hobby seems to have hit new heights? Or are we just scared of a new schism?

By the way, this is actually just a very thinly disguised ploy to get some more vintage slot car pics posted. Where are those great West Coast Thingies of yore?
Doc?

Yep, very definitely John - they really seem to have tried to duplicate the Thingie craze, modern style, also by adding the football liveries - kind of an odd combination, but why not?

Lots of Thingies in Italy towards the end of the 60s - and they had a real affinity for "chopped Cucs"!

thanks Don, it really does handle like a dream with just a small amount of lead in the front. I only bought one because it was in a flash sale and I was curios. it only weighs 61.1 grams inc the lead. John
How rare is it to come across a Classic Stinger Roadster?
Hi Pete,

They actually come up relatively regularly - after that it's just a question of condition and how much you want to spend! Not really one of the rarer Thingies, but a very popular one.

Pete, did you see my article in SLOT magazine No. 19 (July/August 2016) on the Stinger? If not, back copies are available from http://adhpublishing.com/shop/store/magazi...ine-backissues/

Did you know that there is a group on Facebook called Slot Car Thingies? It's worth taking a look and joining. https://www.facebook.com/groups/613024745442362/

Solid reference list. Thanks for the link Don.

I notice the GRC Spitfire was mine. Sold it on ebay. Here are some better pictures.

This is the car I have now, could be a better example for reference.

Hmm, haven't thought about this in awhile Bob, but wonder if this should be updated... Do you see any flagrant missing cars?

Don
Looks like all the USA RTR cars are there from what I can remember.
Hi Joel,

This was done a while ago, and may be missing a few, but it should give you a good running start!

Don, the link is dead not functioning. Where did they go?
I had a bit of a go at making my own thingie with my printer, using a Maserati and A old brass chassis I had, for a bit of experiment, but haven't got round to finishing it.its a lot harder than it looks.

That looks very neat in fact - keep going! I would say more of a Custom than a Thingie, but definitions are vague...

I also realized I made a misleading answer 5 years ago, when somebody asked if the Classic Stinger Roadster was rare. I said not really, but not often in good condition. Of course, I was thinking of the original Classic Stinger - they also did a Roadster version not long before the company folded, and that one is really rare!

Need to shorten the wheel arch up a bit ! I have a another one I did of a Alfa bat car somewhere I'll post a pic when I find it.
Hi Andy,
I noticed that one, but not sure what it is. Definitely looks like a Shinoda style, but not sure which one. There was a big wave of Thingie proxies, repro bodies, etc. about 15 years ago, and a number are still around.

. . . and now it's got to $242 with a few hours left. The bidding looks like yet another bidding war between two over-excited punters. Maybe we should move this to the Ebay Follies section?

Andy
Were these Polistil cars classed as thingies, and were they anywhere near competitive?

Hi, just answered in the other thread.

No, not considered Thingies, they were all real cars.

The vac-formed 1/24 Policar cars were probably decent runners, but not competitive with the hotter cars already available then, and the hard body ones are not all that great. They were mostly sold in sets, altho also available separately. I have both types, but haven't run them, to tell the truth. The soft body ones are now probably too valuable to run, altho Top Toys in Italy makes repro bodies (and even complete repro cars).
