He simplified the formula:

For aluminum you divide the number 1200 by the diameter of the rod you are turning. That gives the RPM your piece of rod should turn to make it into a wheel.
This assumes we are working in imperial and not metric
Good point - at the scrap yard I buy my metal they separate it as they know it will not sell unless the grade is marked. I buy aircraft grade - you can look up the number and the charts will tell you if it machinable.
