Scalextric Tyrrell 008. Intended to be a re-livery/repaint.

Probably one of the most favourite Scalextric cars of the 1970's was the Tyrrell 008. Not only did it look good, it was nimble and quick.

The blue colour of the car was not right and spoilt to a degree the overall appearance.

As a few have done already, repainted it have greatly improved the model.

This supplied me with the inspiration from seeing some excellent versions that have been posted on here, I could just re-livery with the correct blue and it will look better.

I soon realised that the intakes on the lower body sides are not quite correct on the original Scalextric model.

Google has of course revealed many slight variants of the car, as well as the earlier upright radiator versions and the later flat radiator versions.

I will just tweak the body, still a quick job.

I am beginning to regret looking this hard and which version of the radiators shall I do.

While you are doing one you can do two.

What happened to the days when the occasional photograph was found and I did not know all the variants of a car.

I also noticed (and I had not previously) there was a slightly different profile to the top and rear of the real car compared to the model. The engine was also more exposed than on the Scalextric model.

I decided to cut the side intakes off the base and fit them to the body. Changing the profile slightly and making the grills a little finer. This required the underpan to be strengthened.

The basis of the original model is very good.

I decided to use (cut to pieces by now) the Scalextric Williams FW07 engine cover,

Some simple suspension and brake intakes made from Plasticard and piano wire.

More progress soon hopefully.

Very cool.

I remember when I knew everything I needed to know and then the internet came along.

Painted at last, also painted and fitted Didier Pironi and Patrick Depallier helmets.

I hope these turn out as good as some of the other Tyrrell 008's that have been seen on here.

I have made some mirrors from brass rod, I usually use ready available or resin ones that someone has cast. Also plastic rod formed to shape in an electric drill (not recommended). I could not get them small enough in plastic without them melting, a very rough finish or launching into space.

Thanks for the comments, hope you are not expecting too much guys.

As mentioned earlier I used the gear cover from the Scalextric Williams FW07. I also used the original Scalextric Tyrrell 008 rear wing. It does look a little oversize, of course even back in the day this would vary for different races. So as is some races the wing is larger, I just trimmed it a little. Small brass tubes for the exhausts.

I think Patrick needs some new tyres.

I will put some more pictures with the cars on my layout on here soon

The two version I did were Didier Pironi number 3 from the South African Grand Prix at Kyalami 1978 and Patrick Depallier number 4 from Netherlands at Zandvoort 1978.

I could not find anyone who did decals for the Tyrrell 008 so the decals I have made myself, I recall when I first saw the sponsor (possibly on Previous Tyrrell cars unless I did not notice at all) that the spelling is Travelers Checks. In UK it is two ll and obviously the "Cheque" was a challenge. I am UK based so this spelling seemed so wrong but needs to be accurate (hopefully).

Printing white is specialised so I used white decal paper and tried to get the blue surround to match.

May be in the future I will try to get some printed in white without the blue surround. OK for now, quite enjoyable to make, a few attempts to ensure the correct size etc.

Looking at what they were originally, you have done a great job.

Love the amount of self-built details that you have added.

Nice work, without the in-progress photos I wouldn't have known they were conversions

Excellent models, they could easily pass for 'off the shelf' products. 👍🏆😀

Updating this Tyrrell 008 Topic made me wonder why Scalextric have decided upon doing the P34 for later during 2020. Not that I am complaining but there could have been many other choices.

I have finally fitted some new decals to the Tyrrells 008's. I did not intend to update the post but I thought the cars looked so much better with the white print on clear. I had made the original decals on white paper and printed the blue.

Thank you Kevin at KevinOz Decals for doing these. Kevin has been extremley helpful with decals for a few cars that I have replaced decals on.

Kevin does a variety of decals and continues adding to them .. https://kevinoz-decals.com/

Your originals looked good but these take it up a notch. Way to follow through and upgrade the cars to the way you wanted them.

Nice service that Kevin has there, will need to pick some of these decals up.
