Since I've been told off for daring to post off-topic thoughts on a DHORC thread I've started this thread to discuss crash and burn HO racing on short ovals, possibly with a meeting at Xmas this year.

The discussion got as far as Tomy Turbos with paper bodies.

Hopefully this thread will remain unmolested and any ideas are welcome, as are people saying the whole ideas a bag of poo and HO racers in the south of England should do something else.

i think the idea is actually a good one and if i lived near to the event would consider attending.
Have never done crash and burn in any disguise and it seems more realistic than being put back on the track (wouldnt many a 1:1 racer love that idea)
I could just about hold my temper long enough if i was taken off deliberately though as i would class that as cheating, but is that not the idea in slotstox

The aim with slotstox is to win the race, but it is considered normal to knock other drivers out of their slot and the tracks are designed with squeeze sections so that this happens, whether this would be achievable with plastic sectional HO track is something that should be discussed.

Whether anything happens will be down to interest, as will location, but the idea is to have a fun race between Xmas and new year where everyone can turn up, race and have a laugh, with none of it taken too seriously.

I have never bought into the idea of doing anything merely because it is done in real racing. There are a large number of things that don't automatically translate from 1:1 racing down to what we do. Tracks based on real ones are not necessarily going to be better than dedicated slot car tracks, for example.

As for CnB, at least there is no artifice with SlotStox. It is wired into the whole thing (and, interestingly, it's real-world equivalent) that contact is not only allowed it is the whole point. That is why Julian and I were discussing the idea. I think it had relevance to the thread it was in since we were showing examples of were we would find CnB palatable. However we will make the best of it hear.

Julian, when and where would we do this?

LifeLike M's with the sprint bodies would be very exciting, I know they don't come with them but .....

Best of all the paper bodies ontop of xtractions would get my vote

Honestly though of all the regular activities we have at FLBT Slotstox (we own one track and have access to another) is by far the least interesting, think Andy W feels the same and that puts it at the end of a long list, 132 scalex, 132 and 124 production, HO and our 132 1/4 mile dragstrip. That's from a devotee of 1/1 oval racing too.

That said it's better than not racing and it's all just opinions which is what forums are all about....unless you are protected by the misguided hand of mod

Do lifelikes slide at all? the way FLBT play slotstox is that you are allowed (or did I assume this and everyone hates me?) to drift the back into someone else to encourage them off the track, mind you usually backfires and the agressor ends up off the track.

Think I enjoy it because noone takes it too seriously.

The Ms can slide a bit, and we can always specify very tall tyres front and rear too - or just use pancake cars.

I should state again that there is due to be an event at HONK between Xmas and new year, the day before or the day of the Cracker. The HONK event is where my focus will be but perhaps this can be included in that event, if the oval is portable.

What say you?

I can easily make a portable 4 lane oval, it'll need a couple of tables to be put on, or it can go on the floor, if Deane can bring timing equipment it'd make the whole thing possible right now.

Cars - I'm happy with pancakes, though I'd also be happy with Tycos or Turbos, I don't have a LifeLike M so I don't know what they're like and I think Ts could be a bit too stuck down. The only issue with pancakes is has everyone who wants to race got one that runs well.

An interesting PM from Doug saying they'd tried it and it was good fun.

I had a look at the 1:1 NASCAR Modifieds, those things make 600 - 700 BHP

There's a 6 x 2 foot 4-lane Tyco oval in Brighton.

We've run Life Like Ms and X-Tractions on it and they were great. Lexan-bodied brass-weighted in-lines are something I want to try too.

The format we have used was a very 'soft' version of crash & burn with each driver having 3 track calls and then their car has to be marshalled in 'green flag' conditions. I still have to fit the relays and track call buttons.

The racing is very frantic, but is nearer our WHO oval vibe than Slotstox. The driver - or drivers - that nail the rhythm end up a long way ahead.

I was thinking along the lines of a 1:64 quarter mile oval with 15/12" bends at each end, with cross overs and the two centre lanes squeezing together (this will need a bit of track cutting to achieve), I think this will work out at 30" x 106" or about 2ft6 x 9ft, it might be convenient to reduce the length to 8ft as this makes boards for mounting the track much easier.

Cars, I'm open to votes from those that want to take part, venue could be tricky, but somewhere central would be good, we could race in my garage but I appreciate Ipswich isn't exactly central.

That's a big track Julian - not far off our last WHO oval and the same diameter curves. And we were using SGs and Life Like Ts.

Don't forget a scale 1/4 mile oval will probably feel like Talladega with an X-Traction.

Depends the feel you want, but something 2 x 6-ish is very "local short track" using the X-Tractions. That's our experience anyway

I have to say, I don't get the squeeze tracks in slotstox. Racing the ovals - large and small - requires enough luck and judgement as it is.

On the bodies, Barry does a number of sprint car and various old nascar and truck lexans.
