Hi All,

Wondered if any of you chaps would be kind enough to help out with something....

I'm looking for some reference on any of the VW Beetles (Bugs) used in the Trans Ams Series from 1966-67 and again in 1972. I'm considering scratch building a car from an Airfix kit I have, but would like some visual reference of the liveries that were used in the series in the late 60's/ early 70's

Anything will do, colour pics would be even better. I've been searching t'internet, but come up with nothing useful as yet....so it's over to the experts on SF

Thanks for the help in advance

Cheers

Well hello Lee.

You must have seen mine, black and gold !!. I used it to win the SW Trans-am class at Pendles, and came 2nd with it at Wolves yesterday !!.

It is Kelly Sullivan's car, which I believe may be the original inspiration for the "Herbie" concept.

There was also a black one and a dark blue one, silver wheels, in the 1966 series.

http://gwadagone.fotki.com/trans-am-racing pages 3 and 4.

I think that they were out-performed by more competition suited cars like the Lotus Cortina and the Alfa GTA, and faded away after 1967.

Hi Chris,

Yep I've certainly seen your black & Gold version
Great result at Wolves by the way

The black version is a little uninspiring so I may 'copy over your shoulder' and do the gold/ black one as well, plus I do have a revell Alan Mann Lotus Cortina which is begging to be converted!!! Maybe I'll get carried away and do both

Does yours have a CJA chassis or a MTR version?

QUOTE Chris....just do a google image search for 'trans am beetle' and it comes up

Nope... all I get is a youtube video of a drag race between a Beetle and a Pontiac Trans Am... and a description under "Beetle" in Wikipedia that it raced in the in the Trans Am series (I think) in `69 and in `72...

AFAIK there are 2 VWs vintage racing in the US at the moment. The one that is supposed to have TA history is the orange car. The other has been a race car since new, is one of the best documented cars on the West Coast and was the first Beetle ever invited to the Monterrey Historic Reunion.

Think your doing a website search their Greenman rather than an IMAGE search....do and image search and you'll see it along side another Pendles race car about half way down the page.

Great images, thanks very much. Like the orange one...that would make a nice a nice looking car

Okay... got it... not much of a pix tho...

My money would be on the `65 Dove Blue Beetle... It's been a race car for longer than most any TA race car and is damn quick.

OBTW, there will be a sidebar about the car in an upcoming issue of Victory Lane Magazine...

QUOTE I'd love to know if that one competed in the TA series

Is Vistory Lane a US magazine?

Yes VL is a US publication, tho there subscribers on the far side of the BWS. Once the article appears I'll see about getting permission to post it if you're interested

AFAIK the car never raced in Trans AM... It does have many hours racing throughout the region (West coast... especially the Northwest) and a number of trophies for its successes.

Here are a couple more photos from Monterrey

QUOTE Those pictures are fantastic and I'd really like to re-livery my beetle like that. Only problem is for the race I'll be entering it stipulates the car must have run in the trans am series...so guess that rules it out

No fantasy Liveries? Perhaps I can help you out... if you want something a bit different...

A genuine Trans Am car. It's the Kastner Brophy Speical AKA "Kastner's Candy Box"

Greg as you can always seem to find some unique pics maybe you can find one to help me complete my Trans Am Volvo 142? I can find pics of the earlier models But none of the 142 as it competed in Trans Am.

No joy, Phil... I checked through "Trans Am The Pony Car Wars" and did a look a bit on the internet... here's the only shot I could find for Mollin and it's horrible (`might be gold with a black bonnet and bootlid)... Another for Ghilardi which is a PDF... his car may be on the back row of the front page

Other TA Vos included a couple of 544s in U2 and several 122Ss in the early days of Trans Am I know it's no help but what can ya do? some pix follow

No... any Triumph guy would give you the "stink-eye" for that gaffe... It's a Triumph Vitesse... The Herald's bad-assed brother... on this side of the BWS it was known a the "Triumph Sport Six"

QUOTE That Vitesse is a bit different Greenman smile.gif Interesting guide position as well...sticking out of the front like that!

Who makes that Triumph?

I'm the source for the Vitesse...

That's an early iteration of the car... back when I didn't have access to all this new stuff. It' sitting on a Revell aluminum clubman chassis. This car no longer exists. I redid it a few years later with a highly modified MRRC Cobra chassis... I presented that one to Kas Kastner. I'm working on the third version of the car... This time with an MRRC Sebring chassis which will need some mods too. For those who are interested I have a limited number of these castings left... limited by the number of decal sets I have. PM me with enquiries
