Wales and West GT Championship 2018

General information thread relating to all rounds.

Each club will advertise their round on Slotforum as the primary method of competitors gaining an entry.

2018 Series Calendar:

Round1: Feb 4th North Staffs SRC

Round 2: May 13th South Manchester SRC

Round 3: June 17th Llantrisant SRC

Round 4: July 1st Oxford SC

Round5: Sept 16th Wolverhampton SSCC

Round 6: Oct 28th Wye Valley SCC

Ethos:

To race Classic GT cars and Super GT cars in a friendly environment with an aim to raising the skill level of all racers, whilst encouraging newer racers or "home club only" racers to experience the next level of competition. Helping novices and newer racers is actively encouraged, whilst visiting other clubs with different track surfaces will help all racers develop their racing technique.

The Classic GTs are run in almost "out of the box" condition, whilst Super GT allows a little more room for experiment - although several very popular models are very competitive with only the minimum of fetling required - and the old hands will show any newer racers how to get them into shape.

Rules: (Also available in the attached PDF file.)

(Changes from 2017 rules marked in red)

THE CHAMPIONSHIP

1) Wales and West is an analogue slotcar racing championship held annually over six rounds.

2) Each round comprises racing in two Classes: Classic GT in the morning and Super GT in the afternoon.

3) Classic GT races are 20-25 laps per lane, or as time permits.

4) Super GT races are 25-30 laps per lane, or as time permits.

SCORING

1) Points will be scored 50, 49, 48, 47, 46, 45, 44 etc for both Classes at each round.

2) Any car failing to finish a race will be classified as DNF and drop to the bottom of the results table. Two DNFs will be placed lower than one DNF, and so on.

3) A driver's four highest scores in each Class count towards their Championship total for that Class.

4) The drivers with the highest Championship total in each Class will be the Class Champions.

GENERAL RULES

1) No traction magnets allowed (even on wood tracks).

2) Cars must start and finish each race with matching body, windows and interior.

3) White bodies must be painted.

4) Body, chassis and pod may be lightly trimmed to aid rock.

5) Motors must not be modified from manufacturer's spec.

If a motor's performance is suspect it will be subjected to a bench test to establish its performance. Any evidence of tampering will result in disqualification from the whole Championship.

6) Motors must be fitted into pod as originally intended.

7) Motors may be fixed with glue and/or tape.

8) Ballast weight may be added, but must be inside the car.

9) Tyres may be trued, glued and coated, but must be dry to the touch at the start of a race.

10) All non-specified components, (eg braids, eyelets, guides, wires, pinions, gears, axles, stoppers, screws, nuts, springs, weights, lubricants and paints) are free choice.

11) All parts must be commercially available.

12) The scrutineer's decision is final.

SUPER GT RULES

Super GT is intended to be an open racing class. Any questions-please ask!

1) Car must be a detailed model of any closed-wheel 1:1 scale car that raced post-1975.

2) Bodies, chassis and motor pod must be made of injection moulded or 3D printed plastic.

3) Self-coloured bodies need not be painted.

4) Chassis must match body.

5) Interior must be fitted, but may be a lightweight alternative.

6) Rear wings, where appropriate, must be firmly attached at the start of each race.

7) Trims and details such as mirrors, aerials and wheel inserts may be omitted.

8) Motors may be mounted in inline, sidewinder or anglewinder configuration.

9) Motors with excessive magnetraction are not allowed.

Such motors will be identified by the 'cogging' effect. Any motor that 'cogs' when the drive wheels are turned is not allowed. eg Avant 20103, MB Dodo and BRM Super EVO 25.

10) All wheels must have tyres and they must be made of rubber. Silicone and urethane tyres are not allowed.

Good work Martyn.

Just get a mod to pin it, then it will be easy for you to keep the results updated, and easy for the drivers to find them!

cheers Bill.

The first round at North Staffs seems to have migrated to a Thursday.

On that subject, as the NSR Porsche 908 will not have been freely available for a month before Round 1, it will not be eligible for Round 1. Let's play it by ear for Round 2.

Hi John,
I found that motor to have no more magnetraction than a slot it boxer.... but its got loads of torque... 😇😊 there is no cogging when the rear wheels are turned..
The early photographs of the the NSR Porsche 908 shows the motor pod to have push in bearings instead of clip in.
Cheers

For Classics, a query...

Rule 11 - Rear tyres must be any NSR Classic tyre in Supergrip or Ultragrip compound.

Does that mean that previously legal "20x10 16' slick tyres" are no longer legal?

Just need to check, I currently have slicks fitted from last year ;)

Hi,
Having spoken to Steve, the tyres for 2018 must be NSR Ultras or Supers. No F1 tyres. NSR must be visible on tyre wall.
Working out which was Classic and GT tyres would be impossible to scrutineer.
Cheers
Phil
