I`ve not done mud but I distressed a burago Porsche by mixing ground down rust with matt varnish to dull the bodywork and smashed the windows and mixed sugar with aforsaid varnish to look like broken toughened glass inside and on the ground.
The matt varnish also gives a good weathered look on chromework as well.
Dust can be mixed also and looks OK on paint and glass alike, so if on your layout you want a static wreck - have a go.
