Hi All,

Over the past 4 or so months, I have been gradually accumulating track and parts to build a four lane track. The drawbacks to the track are that I currently live in a flat with a very small lounge so space is at a premium. However I do want the track to happen and I also want to be able to have friends over to race rather than just have a track for testing and pootling round on my own.

Therefore the circuit is going to be a permanent layout on a tuckaway table. Original measurements of the useable space suggested I could have a table measuring 7' by 4' which is a 1' shorter than the usual 8' by 4'. A second measure proved this to be ambitious in the extreme and therefore I settled on 6.5' by 4'.

I'm using my lifelong favourite Tomy AFX track to make this beast. My initial experiments with 4 lanes were done before I really had enough 12 and 15" corners which left the inner most lane as an absolute gutter as can be seen below.

Clearly this was never going to be good enough so I continued purchasing track and raided my original track collection from my parents. Now I had lots of 12" and 15" corners...as well as the obligatory 60 x 9" corners and 80 loop sections!!

A visit to a Brighton wood recycling project was made in search of a cheap 8' by 4' plywood board which I could then cut to shape. Instead I found two MDF sheets mounted to a softwood frame. So I snapped that up for an incredibly reasonable £20 and one quick trim with a saw yielded me my 6.5' by 4' table.

Here is mounded up with track sections while I was having a bit of a count up!

Mmmm, track!!

Obviously it would be pointless going to all the trouble of getting the board to just leave it on the floor so some form of legs is required. My initial thoughts were folding banqueting table legs but the table is quite heavy already (it's one downside) so I've decided to go with a pair of folding workhorses. These should cost me about £20 as well. As I say, the table is heavy which is a pain as it is stored long side up in the spare room and has to be dragged through to the lounge short side up. My solution is to mount a skateboard axle and wheels to one long side and a handle on the short side for easy transport. Bingo!

Anyway here is my second attempt at laying out a 4 lane track. I've kept it pretty simple. An inside hairpin for each set of lanes, sweeping constant radius in between the straights and the decreasing radius corner for some interest and challenge.

And here are a few shots of some of the cars on track.

Turbo F1s

Group C Lighted

Tyco F1s

Matchbox Powertrack cars - Just for fun and with giant cat not to scale!

A trio of T-Jets. One more needed and then lane based paintjobs.

Acquired so far I have power supply, controllers, plugs, driver station boxes, Dunlop bridge. Woodcote is kindly helping me with the timing system and hopefully I can tempt him with Guinness to complete the wiring up of the track. Not long to go now I hope!

Cheers

Gareth

Excellent stuff - I like it

That big white space in the bottom left is asking to be filled with a wiggle, and it would give you a slightly wider turn to cut back to the start/finish line (I like where you've put the bridge). Unless - of course - you've got some landscaping designs for that space...

I would suggest not letting me drink the Guinness until the wiring is finished. That would just be asking for trouble

Another classy slot car and cats pic too - there was a cool thread a couple of years back with more...

I'm glad you approve! I was thinking oh man I'm going to have to build some kind of extender for the bridge before it occurred to me to move the start/finish inboard and bam! I think it looks great there.

Interesting thoughts on filling that space out. I am toying with the idea of landscaping but I think I'll wait until we're settled in a house and the track isn't being dragged around so much. I'll hopefully drag the board out again at the weekend and have another crack at that stretch. Plenty of track left over.

And don't worry, I've just re-read the first post and it looks like I want you to do the whole thing whereas actually I'd just like your help!! Still got to go down to Maplin and pick up the wire. I believe I've found the right type (and the right ampage). Stgill need to think on those wire tidy blocks I was talking about though.

Also as I'm mounting onto board and not into it, I'll need to build borders and kerbing ready for those TJets and X-Tractions to power slide over.

He's a bloomin' scaredy cat! But he is very cute and fluffy!

I'm very pleased with my little track. A little bit of landscaping, flags and paint and it'll look awesome!

The next one I build will be a full landscaped job hopefully.

Cheers

Nice work Gareth, I am too in the middle of purchasing track and the mounting it on an MDF board which I then want to winch up to my ceiling in the garage when not in use. Just out of interest where did you purchase the Dunlop bridge from? Keep up the good work

Hi Leet,

The bridge is the regular Scalextric one which works well for timing bridges in HO. I bought it from ebay. Reasonable price and there were several on there.

This morning I just picked up my folding workhorses which will support the track. I've had a bit of a rethink on the design of the layout so I hope to have a go at making it soon.

Cheers

I have both Mercedes C9s actually. The circuit board car and the silver Sauber one. I didn't take photos of all the cars but you can find them in another thread on here or on my Photo bucket. Since January I've probably got about 30 new cars though!

Julian, that's a done deal! I'm up to 4 purple Vegas now. They'll all be re-painted to lane colours and used as club cars for my track.

Hiya Gareth, thanks for the reply. I have been looking into the winch hoist lift thingy all weekend, I have just purchased a 1200lbs winch off eBay and x4 Pulley Hoists so I can lift the board to the ceiling when not in use. Earlier in your article you were talking about using folding horses as the legs for your track, I think i may join you in purchasing some of those as I was previously looking at some 36" folding table legs. These were nice but £28.99 plus £10 p&p started have me look elsewhere. Eventually when I do get this thing running I will post some pictures on the forum.

All the best, speak soon.

Hi Lee,

Sorry for the delay in replying. £40 for folding legs works out very expensively.

I picked up my folding workhorses last weekend. They cost £26 from Toolstation and can hold up to 100kg so should work well. And very importantly for me, even in their box it is still only a few inches wide and deep so don't take up too much space.

This afternoon I have been having a play in Ultimate Racer to see if a new idea I had for the layout would work. I'm pretty happy with the results. If someone could explain to me how to get the track out of UR so I can put it into a post, that would be awesome!

Cheers

Hey Jon,

Cheers mate, I was looking at your new layout yesterday. You're so lucky to have a garage to house it in.

Currently I'm just waiting on wiring and driver station components. Andyslots should be providing me with some information on what he used to build the EAHORC ones. I was planning to build mine similarly with brakes so when he lets me know what is what, I will head off to Maplin to buy stuff. Already seen the wire I need.

Timescale wise I would like to host a home race probably next month as I can't see it all getting done this month with the amount of busy weekends coming up.

Andy P is very kindly helping me out by building the timing system.

I created a new layout design yesterday where instead of going straight into the circle turn the track runs straight along the edge to a hairpin and then comes back to a sweeper parallel to the long back straight before a pair of tight corners to head to the hairpin onto the now shorter straight after the bridge. I think it makes the track longer which is good.

That's good then get some more pics up . It is alwas hard to get I nice track wene space is at a premium wene you won't to run 4 lanes my table is 9f by 4.5 but I would love it to be 12f by 4.5 then I could have some nice straights to let my drop in neo car lous my good it is fast I would say it is about 2.5 to 3 times faster than are pro mods

Here is the new layout design.

I spent the evening hanging out with the missus so couldn't play but the work horses are set up ready for this evening instead.
