What cars are your best race cars

Over the course of the last 8 years, I've collected dozens of 1/32 scale (mostly gt) race cars and have had my kids and a couple of buddies in the hobby with me buying cars and competing along side me. We try to match cars for competitions and I've mainly settled on Scalextric cars and Ninco cars for various reasons... and they mainly race against like manufacturers and class....

Long story short, here is a short list of my best competitors over the years... These are the ones that have won more than their fair share and even won when it shouldn't win:

Fastest car I've ever driven and holds the time record on our track: Scalextric MG Lola (fastest car and only car in it's same neighborhood is the Scale Lister... and totally destroyed the nighthawk that my friend has)
Best GT competitor: Ninco Ascari (ahead of the Mosler by just a nose)
Overachiever: The Synergy TVR. (won't deslot, feels underpowered but in this case the tortoise actually won lots of races)

Other cars that have pushed the above cars to their greatness (basically honorable mention): Scale Aston martin, Scale Lister, Ninco Mosler (probably my favorite all time to race but it's just a little too long to stick with that ascari in a short/intermediate term race).

Some cars just "got it"....

Jury is still out on my Ninco Lambo that has the big motor... He seems to deslot too easy but has the most top end of any car I have. I'll be interested to get him up against the ascari.

Over time, I've seemed to categorize my cars as Ninco vs Ninco and scale vs scale... gt vs gt and the lmp vs lmp.... so each class has it's own champ and we keep track records for each car as well. THIS is really one of the main reasons I'm in the hobby.... for the competition and the relative performance between each car. (AND THE fun time spent with kids and friends!)

I'm kinda curious to see what sort of replies you get to this Rodman. On my track, the chances of a Scaley or Ninco car being considered "great" is very slim. Some of them look nice, and they are fun to race against each other (as you mentioned), but greatness belongs to NSR, Slot It, MTR32, TSRF and some custom-built stuff. Those are the cars that challenge me and hold my highest laptimes. The current record holder is an NSR 917, just under 6 seconds at 10v on a 54' wood track.

Granted, all of these are quite a bit more expensive than most of the Scaley and Ninco cars. Do yourself a favour, do not buy any Slot It or NSR cars.

I`m a bit different Rodman.
Out of my 1/32 cars I love the performance of my old Scaley Powersledge cars, my favourite out of these being a c9 Ferrari.
Out of my 1/40 Jouef cars the favourite performer I have is a basic green BRM. I paid £2 for the car & it is so quiet, stable & fast on the track.
Great shout by the way.
Cheers,
Kev.

It all depends how you define greatness. Some people believe NSR and Slot.It are the only brands deserving of greatness but, as I see it, it's all VERY subjective.

First of all - is greatness in the car or in the driver? For example - if 10 people have a go with the same car is the person who puts the fastest lap time the greatest? I would say yes. But what if that car was a Scalextric C7 mini that goes around in 12 seconds? The other 9 drivers could do the same track in an NSR Mosler in 6 seconds and all claim to be greater than the winning mini driver.

If it's the car - is it about the fastest lap or about the most enjoyable drive? I have a 20metre track with a 4 metre straight followed by a R4 turn and a 2 metre slow down before entering a twisty section with one R1 hairpin and an R2/R1 composite hairpin. My MRSlotcar.CA 787 Mazda puts in the fastest lap times but the way it hares down the straight and clatters into the corners at stupid speed actualy makes me wince in anticipation of a damaging crash so it's a sort of masochistic pleasure driving that beast. By comparison my Scaletric C125 Porsche 935, magless but on my homebrew urethane tyres is 2 seconds slower that the Mazda but is HUGE fun to drive. The Porsche gets driven much more often and I am currently preparing another 5 just like it with chips to take full advantage of my APB and 4 straight lane changers. I would NOT like to race 6 Mazdas (not unless somebody else was buying them!)

So: greatness....

For me the Porsche which runs on home made tyres and cost me 3 quid for the car in the scraps bin under a table at Gaydon has true greatness running through its arteries. OK I had to refurbish it, respray it and replace a few bits for pennies but it is massive fun.

The MRSLotcar.CA Mazda is good - very good. But it is impressive but maybe not great.

Let the debate begin

I know that fly has the reputation of being a great competitor however I went a different direction.... as early on the fly cars seemed to sell at a premium... and once you get several of one manufacturer, you're best to stay in that ballpark... I may have to grab one for the fun of it though...

All my cars are handicapped by one major thing, my driving.
Quickest car I've got is probably an HO scale Wizzard Patriot with a 3.5 ohm armature, this was good enough for 4th in UK national racing a year ago but would probably be lucky to make a B final now, but I stopped racing it because I wasn't enjoying it and now in HO scale I race 1970s Aurora Magnatraction cars which probably take twice as long to lap a track as the Wizzard but they are much more fun.

I also race 1:32 slot cars and my fastest is probably my NSR 917, but it hardly gets used, I'd rather race a Scalextric Camaro, Carrera Dodge Charger 500 or an SCX Mk2 Escort because they are all more fun, especially on a short home track.

QUOTE (Julian_Boolean @ 19 Dec 2011, 21:42) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>... I race 1970s Aurora Magnatraction cars which probably take twice as long to lap a track as the Wizzard but they are much more fun.

Oh wow - memory lane! I briefly had some Aurora stuff in the late 1970's. I had a couple of the early in-line cars (G-Plus?) - a pair of Ferrari F1's if I remember rightly. But I also had a collection of the pancake motored (magnatraction?) cars - a yellow Nissan (510?), a blue Ford Capri, a Plymouth Roadrunner with big rear wing and a Plymouth Javelin(?). The Nissan was brilliant because it was very square and slid off the barriers very nicely thanks. The Ferraris were faster overall but no fun. The pancake motors were actually quicker in a straight line than the in-line cars but cornered like sponges soaked in melted butter. LOVED the pancakes, TONS of torque. Hated the in-lines because they were too fast and you were either on or shooting off towards the skirting board with no warning - way too difficult to drive on the edge.

I repeated the mistake last Christmas when I bought my son the Micro Scalextric Disney Cars set. At 5 years old he couldn't drive them - too fast and too often de-slotted. I bought a pair of vintage Aurora pancake motored cars and had some fun on the Scalextric track with them but they didn't drive that well (something to do with the lower profile rails on Micro Scalextric I would think). When I bought a full digital 1:32 setup in the summer he instantly "got" the Pit Lane game, lane changing AND refuelling and happily slides my transit vans around the hairpins without coming off. The Micro Scalextric has stayed in the box ever since and will probably hit ebay next month.

Back to greatness - my MRSlotcar.CA Mazda is not great from my son's point of view - he thinks the matt black is "boring". He much prefers my new Carrera '57 Chevy Bel Air because it's yellow and has flames painted on the sides AND it has lights at the front and the back. Greatness is all about perspective. His view of greatness is no less valid than anybody else's !

Best race cars is really opened for a lot of different interpritation do you mean racing or just driving on track ,
for me racing non magnet on a wood track the 3 best cars that I have driven so far is a Slot It Nissan R390 GTi
matt black the Ninco Calsonic Nissan 350Z & a Scalextric Gulf Aston Martin DBR9 , raced in 3 different classes
I didn't win all the time but they were all enjoyable to drive all the time .

Actually, it really doesn't matter what I meant. Answer this any way you want to answer it. The point is we're thinking and talking about some of our best race cars and that was really the whole point.

Some people only consider their race cars great if they've won awards with them.... as for me, it's different. I don't have the forum to win awards except for bragging rights around the house which is plenty for me!!! I do have cars that have been (i believe) fairly matched with their piers and have come out on top more times that not.... have been great racers over their useful life.... etc.. etc... whatever you like man.

I've heard great things about the NSR Mosler and I've experienced great things with that oft mentioned Scalex MG LOLA!!! It's my best for sure by almost a full second over the next best car we have. I'm getting the Nighthawk from a buddy soon so I'll have a better match for him to race with.

Hi guy's,

As a slotter i collect, build and race. But when it comes to racing, the pick of car normally depends on the class and rules that are set.

Don't really have a pick of brand or car,i just race what evers the fastest even if it means racing an ugly car.

I'd like to share some snaps of my cars I've had success with. These are just some of my success cars.Hope you like the snaps.

I've won the Australian championships twice in Slot.it group C class driving a 956 Porsche both times. These were my winning cars.

Winner in Scx Australian championships.

Winner in the NSR Mosler Australian championships. My winning car is number 1 car.

Winner in the NSR Classic class driving a p68.

I can only go for my club racers, as none of the others have been 'proven' in competition. On that basis:

NSR Ford Mk.IV - the baby-poo brown Andretti/Bianchi car, now sold, which seemed to have the legs of the other NSRs.
Spirit BMW 635 CSI - repainted and nothing else done to it, but we seem to get along famously for the most part.
Hornby Vauxhall Vectra BTCC - proves that you don't need an Audi A4 to win in the BTCC class.

That said, for pure pleasure, not much has ever surpassed the old Scalextric (Spain) Porsche 911 'Jocavi' and 935 'Jagermeister' that I had as a kid - endlessly driftable!

Well, I'm going to revive an old topic from 5 years back. I started this thread so that we could discuss, brag and generally just chat about our best performers.

I have a 170 foot Carrera track that has a super fast section with 4 long straights linked together with banked turns giving the big motor cars a chance to stretch their legs. I also have 2 crossovers and a very technical section where the more stable cars catch up.

I've used both Scalex and Nincos but for me and my kids, I've found the heavier magneted Scalextric to be a better selection. Less frustration and more fun!

So below I've ranked my best Scalextric performers in the GT1/GT3 class which is all we race (I'm a Blancpain GT3 fan!). Interesting enough, some of my older cars are currently performing as well as any of the newer cars. Performance is based on either me or my kids competing in 3, 5, or 10 lap sprint style races. Local rules are that if you crash you're out.

1. Ferrari F430 C2804 - This car never was the best of the batch but for some reason, recently, it's come to the front. It is 3X louder than every other scalextric car and has a ton of speed for the straights. The longer the race, the worse this car performs as it is heavy in the rear.

2. Porsche GT3 RS C2899 - This Porsche is the deal of the century. It's light and super tough. Great acceleration due to it's light weight, it's always easy to be consistent with this car.

3. Aston Martin DBR9 C2644 - Probably one of my oldest cars along with the TVR and it can hang with anyone. It's so smooth, the longer the race, the better. This car still has top end to keep up with the other scalextric cars and would probably be my choice for a 200 lap race!

4. TVR T400R c2590 - This car along with the Aston has the most miles and probably the most wins under it's belt over the last 9 years. This car is short and has similar driving characteristics to the Porsche but it's smooth (broken in more?) like the Aston. The breaking is less severe which probably allows for a smoother drive over longer races. It's a great pick for intermediate range races. The only negative with this one is that it will topple over if you overdrive it whereas the Aston's rear will kick out and let you know that your being too aggressive.

5. Lamborghini Gallardo GT Gulf C3283 - This is another bargain, a damage resistant selection, this car is light and has tons of power. It feels similar to the TVR in handling characteristics. This has been yet another surprise performer for us recently as it was a bit of an afterthought purchase but it's beaten all of the top 4 recently.

6. Audi R8 LMS GT3 Phoenix Racing Bilstein C3045 http://www.slotforum.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=47816 - Yet again a super resistent selection, this car is stable and a beautiful car on track. I'm an Audi fan and I'm hoping this car will emerge as one of the best, but for right now, it doesn't hold any particular advantages over the above competitiors. It has close to the same top end as the Ferrari but I've yet to beat my son's f430 with this R8. Maybe I should put that on my TO DO list.

7. Aston Martin - Gulf Version - c2960 - I view this car as a long term project with the British Racing Green sister to this car as one of my favorites. I'm confident that over time, this car will become as good as my c2644 Aston. It's louder and not quite as smooth atm.

8. Audi TT - Not fair to cram this car into this category but a fun honorable mention - This super inexpensive and lightweight, durable selection is great to have for guests to drive. It's very light and thus extremely quick off the mark but it tends to topple too easy to be compared to some of these heavyweight contenders above.

This week, I've added the BMW Z4 Team Russia C3624, the Mclaren MP4 12C GT3 C3604 and the Bentley contenintal GT3 BGTC c3515 to my stable of cars. I'm hopeful that these 3 will fit into our group and compete well as frankly there's not much performance difference between my cars 1-6.

I've got some cars that work well in our club classes.

Super magnet F1: Scalextric Renault 2006. Bought it as a shelf queen but it's a stonker. Sadly needs new front axle assembly after hitting the wrist of a self-marshalling driver while flat-out on the main straight!
1960s Le Mans (no magnet): NSR is banned so it's a question of who's got the best Slot.It GT40. So far it's mine - a white kit painted as 1966 Le Mans (baby blue/orange)
Scalextric Modern GT (no magnet): Lamborghini Aventador. Wide rear axle = good.
Hornby BTCC (brown bar magnet) - Vauxhall Vectra still scrapping well with the Audi A4s and Renault Lagunas
Modern 2WD Rally (no magnet): Ninco Renault Clio able to cope with the more fancied Power Slot Polos
1970s Le Mans (no magnet): Avant Slot Mirage - so good we're banning them!
Slot.It Group C (no magnet): Lancia LC2

There are several classes in which there is only one car worth using.

In Modern GT (with magnet) nothing yet built can catch the old Fly Vipers. In Modern Le Mans (no magnet) it's fairly even between the NSR Audi R18 and Avant Slot's Audi R10 and Pescarolo. In Hornby Muscle (no magnet) it's still the Corvette L88 by a mile. In Raid (no magnet) it's still the Schlesser Buggy. In Ninco GTR (NC1) it's still the McLaren F1 GTR. In SCX SRS2 it's still the Jaguar XJR-14. In Trucks (no magnet) it's the Buggyra.

I think those are all of the offensively good ones.

We are very pleased with our digital club classes. Fair, enjoyable racing is our goal and so far pretty much all of our grids are providing this along with handling and performance appropriate to the category.

Scalextric 90s BTCC Super Touring
Scalextric Classic Trans-Am
Scalextric Rallycross Group B
Scalextric Porsche 911 GT3
Scalextric Trucks

I don't think anything I have has achieved enough to be "great" - though that's mainly because I'm setting them up/driving them. My Slot.it XJR12 was the first car I won a club race with, and my NSR Corvette is probably the car I want to really spend ages racing...

The Slot.it Alfa 33/3 is the car that scares me the most to drive. It's probably the only car I am hesitant on the throttle with... It's a bit beyond my talents to drive it fast yet.
