You see two cars in a car park.

One is a Citroen Saxo which has ludicrusly large aftermarket bumpers, a two foot wing. It is painted in metallic purple/orange and has dancing green lights coming from the sills. It's pounding out music that makes your ears bleed and you can't even see who is sitting in it 'cos the windows are so smoked out. The alloys are 18 inch chrome spinners with some serious low profile rubber. It has been lowever to the point that it won't get out of the car park without being lfted over the speed bumps. The exhaust is about 10 inches in diameter and is really just a fancy new backbox...

The other is a Mk1 Golf. It is in factory paint, factory bumpers, but inside (you can see inside 'cos the windows are only clear perspex and netting) there are no carpets... no back seats, no passenger seat (it is replaced by a fire extinguisher), no dash, no radio... nothing that causes excess weight. Alloys are some Oz-Race white magnesium 13 inchers with some Pirelli rubber. The exhaust is a 'de-cat' straight through system with no bends.

The drivers both come up to you.

The Saxo man (in his wonky cap, and jewellery) begins to tell you about his car. He says things like 'tidy', 'sweet' and 'loud'. He tells you about the ludicrus amount of money that he has spent on the labour to get everything fitted. He also points out that his car is about 15 years newer than the Golf.

The Golf driver wanders over (wearing some Sparco trainers, shorts and a sleevless t-shirt, obviously to save weight) and waits for you to enquire about his car. He tells you about the ludicrus amount of money that he has spent on race parts, and the time he has spent fitting them himself. He tells you about the bored out block, taking it up to a 1.8. It has a turbo fitted, and a dump valve, but it is re-circulating to provide performance without the tacky 'piss' everytime you change gear. He has lowered it, but by the correct amount to give his room to touch the kerbs on track days.

Now before I go on to describe even more things that these guys have done to their cars...

Who do you respect more?

I work around race cars (another plug for marshaling again!) and when you take a look at one, even if it's a XR3 Escort, theres a lot of time and effort gone into it.

I'd say race cars.

James

ps, maybe the way u ask the question Lotus, is a lil biased. only my thought

I used to participate in speed contests. I build very low key high performance automobiles. If you intend to square off against one of the cars I work on, you'd better have more than just a four banger under the hood. I don't care how much boost you're pushing. I'd ignore both of those clowns.

QUOTE I'd ignore both of those clowns

When I read you reply, a Bill, I kinda figured you were an American

Checked your profile, and was confirmed

BTW, I'd ignore both as well, but if pressed, I'd take the Golf (cough-cough) and have fun running it in to the ground. Tain't nothing worth saving anyhow

You what?!?!?!

Mk 1 Golf is a classic. If it weren't for the resale value, I'd take it over a 250GTO (sorry Roland) anyday. Honestly, bloody yanks...

Anyway, enough of the smartass 'neither' comments. At least noone who has replyed chose the razzer. I mean, what's up with them?

Anyway, cheers for the response...

QUOTE (Intergrali @ 27 Jun 2004, 13:51)de-cat stright thru exhaust.. it's the same term for one thing ya muppet!
ER,.. not quite Inte. An exhaust can have its cat removed, but still have silencer boxes on it. Straight thru implies that the gases don't have to take a twisty route through any silencers.

As if you lot didn't know I'll have the race car any day. Sound systems and paint are secondary and only necessary when you cannot afford to insure cars with real engines

I'd take the Golf over and over again...

and I'd be whoopin' MK-2 Escort both his Escort and his 205 GTI's asses...

I drove a stock 205 1.9 GTI recently... and I came right out of a stock Golf II G60... and damn... was I happy when I got back in the V-Dub...

Ok... the Pug is fast... but the Dub was fast AND handled like a hot-hatch should...

A project of a friend of mine:

Golf MK-I: stripped down compelely, fitted a chipped up 1.8 20VT (from a Seat Leon Cupra), fitted roll-cage... now that's a car...

Oh please young lady! Someone send him out here quick!

QUOTE Anyway, enough of the smartass 'neither' comments.
just one more please.!!

The only things that comes in a two litre container is milk or orange juice.

Serious, if you get a chance Lotus, come out here to Oz and we'll take you to a V8 race driver training school and strap you in. You fair dinkum wont be able to breathe until you hit about 200ishkm, and after that we'll take you surfing.

You Ok with sharks? The crocodiles eat most of them out here.

Hey, a trip to Oz worked for young Harry.

Not through lack of desire!

I mean Ford should have access to V8s - 5ltr etc. Vauxhall=GM=Holden so more big V8s there. It's just this poxy country we live in with a poxy government, too many fuddy duddies, do-gooders & tree huggers and a police force who is a complete pain in the arse!

Nicely put!

QUOTE I keep forgetting our UK friends are engine limited

a Bill - it's 'cos we've got the most expensive petrol ON EARTH!!

Lotus - another smartass neither comment, mate. If I had a reasonable budget to play with a car, I'd want RWD and decent performance to start with, then go to work.
Stripped-down, sorted third-hand Porsche 911 anyone?!!

Rob
