We all had go faster ideas but who out there is willing to stand up and admit to the failed ideas .I think my biggest ever slot racing turkey was the time I turned up at southport with an electronic antilock braking system, this consisted of a relay in the brake line being switched on and off by a variable speed multi vibrator circuit ,made a great buzzing sound and did switch the brakes in and out like I designed it to , did it help ? NO!
Lets here those slot racing turkey stories now!

Pathetic!
I knew a man that drilled holes through his body work to lighten it and increase airflow!
Oh man I've had so many crazy ideas, but I can't think of any at the moment...

Wait, you know the circuits which are designed to light up brake lights on release of the throttle? Well, I was thinking of hooking a modified version up to an electromagnet in the bottom of the chassis. The core would be made up of a relativly low magenetised piece of metal, so that it would not slow the car too much on the straights. However, I never bothered to find out what rating of componants to use or how many coils... Just an idea though...

...doesn't make them faster, but they taste better in a martini...

Weirdest thing I did was to mount a sidewinder motor so that it partially pivoted in the mounting brackets under torque action. The torque under braking applied "brake shoes" against the rear tires. Did it work? Of course not!

Hi

Geeze, let me count the ways. From 59 through 61, I was just happy that something worked...then: 62, Scale working suspsnsion on a Lotus 19, Front motor rear drive working sus on a Ferrari, friction shocks, driveline U-joints.
In 63, I finally saw commercially made slot cars. Figured they knew what they were doing. So, carved balsa bodies with all the running gear "snapping" into the bottom of the body.
Not epoxying the rewinds to save weight(if I wind TIGHT enough!).
Quad winds.
Brass TUBING chassis, you know you are wrong when you end up putting the piano wire in the tube to hold it together!
Not buying Cox cars when they were cheap.

I could go on.

G'Day
I fabricated a ground effect venturi from lexan sheet left over from my wing car days. I fitted it to the rear of a Betta Sauber C6 body with sticky tape.
Absolutely no downforce but wrecked the handling.
The club slot "boffin" had a look and started going on about the technical benefits. then the guy who protests everything that he didn't think of(do all clubs have these types?) started wailing to the scrut and wanted the car disqualified cos I beat him inspite of what the mod did to the car.
I did it as a bit of a joke really but was half curious to see if it would work.
Cheers Lenny

Guy who protests everything? Yes, every club has one, and they are usually appointed scrutineers!

You say this about aero effects not making any difference. Have you ever lost the wing off of the back of your car? It makes a difference when driving it but I can't think it's from lost weight, because most don't even weigh a gram. Can anyone else comment on this?
