I have several chips with damaged LED's they look pretty easy to replace but what ones do I need and where from ???

To piggyback on your question...

Are the LEDs in the car chips the same as those used in the track to sense for the digital lane changes?
Or can they be the same? I presume the function is the same, to recognize the light and send a pulse down the wire to the electronics that are attached.
MartinT and "who was it?" found some LEDs for adding to the track sensors to avoid missed pulses due to sliding.

Err... no, the types are different. One emits light, the other senses it.
The car has an LED that emits light. Light Emitting Diode.
The track has a IR photodiode, or TSOP sensor, which detects the light.
I'm pretty sure they are different, and not interchangeable.
The only people putting LEDs into track are Scorpius people. Otherwise, they're putting sensors into the track, usually TSOP.

Yup, that was a "duh" moment if I had thought about it. I am looking for a "sensor" to sense the LED lights on the cars to send a pulse to a circuit I am working on. Was going to use reed switches or dead/live strip, but wondered if an IR diode would work. I will Google TSOP as I am not familiar with that term.

I guess I never mentioned it, but no one will be surprised when I reveal that I am a stay at home dad. Some call it unemployed, since I'm a man, not a woman. Anyway, other than errands and such, I'm pretty much always at home. This is why I'm able to post so prolifically and at almost all hours (except for sleeping hours in the western USA ;-). I could also say that I'm "always at work", though even I don't really consider it work. Any employment I've had in the last 16 years has been working from home, as well. I'm on the lookout for a job these days, but it's slim pickins out there.

I don't know what TSOP means, either, but I know it's a kind of IR/light sensor. The additional sensor for Pit-Pro is a TSOP style sensor, I believe.

Sounds like a project all on its own. Obviously they are surface mount LED by what light frequency? UV has a broad spectrum.

The LEDs in the cars, as asked about in the original post, are normal "bulb" LEDs soldered to the board, or on lead wires.
I think the IR spectrum isn't especially wide, but I believe 950nm is quite common for these types of things. So, a 3mm, 950nm IR LED should do the trick nicely.
I hope that someone with more precise knowledge can help.

^ I stand corrected. I thought they were surface mount but I'm not a digital guy. 990 is that the same as TV remotes? I wonder?
But I'm used to finding stuff by use not by type.

EDIT: Searching for Infrared Emitters yielded more results than search for LED. Farnell has 5mm ones.

I think I remember someone experimenting with larger LEDs, like the 5mm ones. I think it might have been Savage, but could have been someone else.
