Which car in any category , do you think has the best aerodynamic body ?

I'm a Thingie freak , and I can't go past the Dynamic Bandit . Its simplistic Open Wheeler stance and well contoured shape , is just brilliant ! Sure , on long tracks , the 36D powered cars leave it behind , but as soon as the corners arrive , it's out in front again . Just a pleasure to drive . The Super Bandit was made to keep up with the 36D motors on the straight , and had the hotter Green Hornet motor . But unfortunately after about 30 or so laps , it would start to become alarmingly hot and slow down , or even burn out . I was also not impressed with the paint job on the Super Bandit , that chocolate brown, done nothing for its supposed hotter status . But the colour of the normal Dynamic Bandit in Root Beer , was most impressive.

Agree with you Zig, one of the nicer Thingies. All business, a proven chassis, simple but effective design.

Here are my Bandit and Super, as found, in different shades of red; I think the Super Bandit was sold with a black body, according to PdL.

Very clever body mounting system, with slots in the sides of the body. And I like the fact that Dynamic recognized the fallibiility of this method and included a screw hole in the middle of the bracket for when the slots split!

PS: ZIg, just realized your thread was about aerodynamic bodies, not the Dynamic Bandit.

No question there, it's the ...

Ciao Zig,
Imho one of the thingie bodies with the best aerodynamic was the Mini Dream Car Mini Can Am: a real wedge.

It all depends on your definition of "aerodynamic":

  • Lowest drag with the least amount of down force (you car will launch before reaching the banking)
  • Medium drag with fair down force (your car will make it through the banking if you blip the throttle on entry)
  • High drag but high down force (your car will be a bit slow in the straight but will lap faster than the other two combinations).

Depending on what you are trying to achieve, the bodies will be different.

Whilst not entirely relevant to how this thread started, permit me to say that two episodes spring to mind about slot car aerodynamics:
1) When competing in the BSCRA Nationals a few years back I saw the body of a 1:32 Eurosport become detached at the front. Even in this smaller scale, when it came to the main straight the car just flipped and took off. I hadn't appreciated that aero was so important. But a Eurosport ISRA-type car is really quick.
2) In testing a 1:24 BSCRA Production car of my own I ran it in two configurations. Firstly with a 'standard' Bentley Le Mans body (2001 or 2003 style). I thought I was going well until I swapped to a high-downforce tail something or other (and no, not a Wing Car). No comparison, it was way quicker through the corners and not noticeably slower down the straights.

Wing cars produce far more aerodynamic downforce than other slot cars - way more than the ISRA / BSCRA type cars Richard is talking about.
I guess Brad Friesner's world record holding wing cars have the best body aerodynamics.

A real Thingy on display at Gaydon today. Actually, a 1966 Vauxhall prototype.

Not sure this is the same one, but Vauxhall also did a prototype called the XUR-2, which was done as a slot car by Testor - and before it was identified, we all thought it was some kind of Thingie! Your's looks a lot more like an Opel GT, if memory serves, which is not a given...

Here's the Testor car.

Yes Don ,
That's the car Testors based their model on .....but but but .....they have the driving position on the left hand side , where as the Vauxhall is right hand drive. That's enough ammo to have it classified as a Thingie ? I have the same car in blue metallic .

All rather stylish, including the Opel GT.

What chassis is under the green one Zig?
That other one is the open wheeler one, not the Mantaray by the way, sorry the name of it escapes me at the moment! I only received them from Patto's along with some decals today mate so give me a chance!😉 I'll get some colour on them soon.
Cheers,
John.
Viper, the one that came out after the Manta Ray.

Sorry John , poor eyesight as I'm getting on ? Well that's my excuse ! Hahaha .
Below is the chassis of the Classic Serpent also . It come standard with a 26D. Wasn't the greatest chassis Classic Industries came up with . But still passable ! Second pic , the Viper in the background . Now the Viper was a very aggressive model , with a 36D motor , it was quick , but in my opinion , a bit hairy to drive ....I can't place my finger on it , perhaps a bit unbalanced !

Would it not pretty much be any high speed wing car, if that suits your taste and I guess they might be considered in some circles to be “door stop thingies”! ;-)
