I must have missed the "era" by just a few years or maybe just a few miles. I got my first slot car set - an Aurora HO set - for Christmas 1967. I was aware of 1/24 and 1/32 scale cars (my next door neighbor's father had a set - Revell, I think), but everyone had HO sets in their basements. It was a blast getting together to race or just trying to beat the HO train to the crossing (or not). Man, what I would give to be able to go back to that time and place.

Best present I'd ever received, but alas by 1973 I put the rheostat down for other pursuits. Left an absolutely indelible mark though. Fast forward to 1995 when I began collecting HO cars again and then in 1997 the bug bit hard, real hard, when I re-discovered 1/32.

Very nice cars in any case Edo.

Hope it's not one of the Repro Perris resin ones that have recently sold on ebay for almost genuine money

Help!

I am out of control.
I have space for about 250 cars.
I just passed 900.
I spent most of yesterday rearranging the spare room so I can cram in more cardboard boxes to take what I have already ordered for this year.
I have been trying to stop buying for years.
Just when I thought I was getting on top of it along came Revell and AutoArt.
I dont think I can last more than a couple more years.
Is anybody working on a cure?

I hope I did not chase anybody off this topic with my last post, as it is very interesting.
There must be more collectors out there, tell us what you collect and why.

My own collecting habits are completely scatter gun.
See it, like it, buy it.
All types of cars, all manufacturers, no plan at all.

I suppose there is a bias towards what I think I missed out on when I first had a Scalextric.
Capris, TR7s, Rovers, Trucks etc.
I may have the timeframe wrong, these are just what I think I remember wanting when I could not afford them.

There are also many cars from the last 8 or so years because that is how long I have had a house with space for a permanent track.
But the fact I ran out of sensible storage space for more cars long ago does not seem to have slowed my rate of purchase as much as I would like.

I often think it would be nice to have a more specialised, and therefore smaller and more manageable collection.

But I cant think of a single car in my collection that I would like to sell.

Does anybody else feel this way or is it just me?

I had to limit myself to GT and Endurance cars. As there are already a vast supply in this category, I cant buy all the cars I want so if started collecting F1 and rally, the domestic economy will be in a complete crisis

I really do like the F1 cars from Scalextric and might give in to them soon.

Ewan, I started out like that, but with age, wisdom, less space and diminished memory, I've started defining my collection a little more - basically eliminating all the stuff that seemed neat at the time, but didn't really do anything for me once it was in the collection - horse racing sets, etc. Also selling or trading anything that, after having for a couple years, did not really stir up any emotion. I'd like to think I have an active collection, since I race the cars, but you just can't keep up a stable of 500+ racers, so choices have to be made....

Now, as to projects, you can always imagine you're going to finish them some day! I personally have about 50 to restore and another 50 or so scratch-built projects....

The real wake-up call was the first time I bought something that I already had in the collection without realizing it. Oooops, collection's getting too large....

Heard a rumour yesterday that Graham Perriss has about 24 Bugatti shells that were never finished and is thinking of completing and selling them! Wonder what that will do for the ebay price?

I'm a collector too .and I compete on the track
But one thing bothers me: You know the limited editions??FLY perhaps??
First you collect ALL the Vipers, then they launge the final one Nr 49 in a giftbox
with complete history (nice) And what do they do???

THEY GO ON and on and on

with the same bloody model

Personally, I like to have 10 or 15 of the same model with different liveries. I think they look nice when displayed together.

I must however agree that the limited editions are not so "limited" anymore, there seems to be more of them than the standard cars, especially from Fly. And they are indeed way too expensive.

i got nothing against other peoples collections ,but answer the thread .

i collect cars that are worth collecting..........

cox revell ,monogram,k&b, tamiya, and some others that came out in hard plastic.
these cars are mostly kit cars and a very few rtr's.
usually in 1/24 scale,some in 1/32 as well.

yes it did went out of control,so i had to sell 98 % of them dirt cheap.
