WHICH CARS DO YOU COLLECT

I got back into slot-racing in June 2004 after having spent over 30 years in RC since stopping slots in 1970. In a period of about 7 months, I managed to build up a collection of some 70 cars, mainly Scalex, some FLY, a couple of Slot.its, VMG, Carrera, SCX and a GB Track. When I started my collection, it was unfortunately without sense of real purpose or direction - I bought more on impulse than on logic.

I saw a car I liked and I just signed for it - the missus nearly hit the roof when she saw my credit card statements, so now I exercise much more discretion when thinking of adding to my collection. My favourites are F1s, Sports and GT racers from the 50s and 60s although you wouldn't think that when looking at my collection! As far as I am concerned, slot-racing cars are meant to be raced and I intend to use them that way. If I want a display model, I would buy a static diecast.

These are not on the spreadsheet yet and it says 970 cars.
And I just realised Scalextric Goodwood GT40s, Fly Teams etc. are only counted as one car.
How do I stop?

None of my cars live in the loft.
But these three will not be run.
You can buy cars that run the same in different liveries for a fraction of the price.
I run about 80 cars (10 added this year).
I dont feel I am missing anything by not running every car I buy.
I find it difficult enough to keep 80 running well.
All you need for fun on a two lane track is two good cars.

I have over 50 cars and i just started last summer. I happened to be at the Richmond IRL race and decided to pick up the Indy set. I got home and realized it didn't have near enough track. So we went to the hobby store before it closed on a Sunday and bought the DTM track. well i have alot more track now and alot more cars. I am running 4 lanes right now so me and my friends can race. I was and still am a 1/18th diecast collector. But the one shop i goto has both diecast and slots and the shop keeper had been trying to convince me for awhile. So now i am racing with some guys local on a 6 lane Carrera track. As to what i collect i like the older looking cars. I am buying old F-1 cars and hoping to update them. I am also getting into scratchbuilding as i like odd projects. I love cars so that's why i'm here. I forgot to mention i like anything with fat fenders. What i wouldn't give for an IMSA Chevy Monza or IMSA Pontiac Fiero. I also love the Fly trucks. Making then go fast is great. Thet beat and bang on each other just like the real thing. I would love to have all of Jim Hall's Chaparral's. Other than that it's what ever tickles my fancy. Thanx for the place to belong.

2 Fly porsche 908/2 with the Brands Hatch 69 liveries; the bodies are undergoing some work specially headlights and headlightcasings are reworked to the correct proportions, which really adds to realism. The Fly Porsches are unfortunately not very accurate in their proportions and detailing!

I've just a little collection of 50 cars
Most of them are from Le mans (80% )
Some are conversion of models from Fly, Ninco, scalex to fit the Le mans thing (but I'm not an expert).
I've got some F1 from scalex.
My next goals it to make a permanent layout with my Ninco track, but that's another subject.
These cars are collected from 2001.
None of them are static, they all go on my track!

Agreed with Tropi,
it's so easy to "lose focus"..
The major problem in the cars is the difference between wanting to race competitively on Wooden Tracks, and now, having a personal PRO X track at home.. After doing the Wood Sled thing for over 4 years, I've decided it's much cheaper, and more fun to buy cars which run good out the box..
However, the twist there is, I'm in the process of converting many cars to Digital, and I've found the Slot It HRS chassis an absolute dram to work with, and, the fact it can be so easily adjusted to allow fitemnt of many different bodies.. So, with a simple low cost and even chassis, I have started rebuilding my older Le Mans cars into correct looking, liveried cars, Le Mans 80's (Ala Tropi's Sig), and then current FIA GT LMES cars..
It's just so hard to stop... :-O

There are a few criteria that drive my slot car buys, all geared for collecting.
If it doesn't fit in my small collection of Fly 917's, or my small collection of Scalextric GT40's, or my small collection of LeMans winners, does it improve my overall cross-section of cars?
When we're running cars together, I hate not having the right kind of car to put on the track, so I try to make sure to collect a broad range.
Is it out of hand? 150 cars in under 2 years, so I'd say yep, it's out of hand. I hope it stays that way.

I've never thought of my cars as a collection as such, more an eclectic mix of plastic doovies with wheels on them.....
....about the only series of cars I have a complete set of (with a spare or two!) are the Scalextric V8 Supercars.
The other series I seem to like (going by what I have on the shelf) is the Carrera classic Nascars, only needing one to have all released so far.
There is that much out there on the market at the moment I find it a little hard to keep up!

I've only been in the hobby about 3 weeks now and have 9 cars. All of my cars are either set up for the track, or are in the process of being set up for the track. I always run them box stock first so I can see how it handles and what difference the mods make.
I only have one of each of the following:

My collection isn't currently out of hand, but is quickly getting that way. My collection also sees regular track time, no shelf queens here. When buying a new slot car, I usually go for one that drives somewhat different from what I already have, as well as a car that I like. I try not to have 2 cars that drive exactlly the same(take a look at the list I have now and see which ones might drive exactly the same). Eventually, it's going to happen, but I can still try to avoid it for as long as possible. Definitely plan on doing major expansion of the collection, but for the moment, I've got to stick with what I've got and work with it until my money begins to grow so to speak.
