converted a start car and an aston martin to digital and both of them went backwards when first connected to the power.

How many will I have to do before I get them the right way round first go

Or is there a trick I am missing?

Well, it's 50/50 so statistically, you'll get some right the first go around.

I do a quick test with a battery to the braid, or on the track, before I put the body on. Sometimes I'll just twist the motor wires on to make sure, then solder them when I'm sure.

Use a couple of crocodile clips to hold the red & black wires in place before soldering ...... as my old granny used to say ...... "to be sure, to be sure".
