Help ??

We have a new SAMCA spec track opening here soon in Johannesburg. (Russell - Its Mike Hudson's track).

No-one outside of the priviledged few that are involved in the actual design and building have seen the layout, so none of us have any idea of what to expect.

All I know is that its a wooden 6 lane with MagnaBraid. So, should I be preparing according to wooden track rules or regular magnetic track rules. I know the basics will always apply, but beyond that, I don't know which avenue I should follow.

I can say this; with the exception of the Slot.It Audi, my good magnet cars have been absolute dogs on a wooden track, and vice versa.

Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Depends on what you mean by wooden track rules. The type of races you want to run need to be decided upon. At Slot Tech we have a wooden track with steel braids and any car with a magnet sticks and goes well. However, we do have some non-magnet race series which we run too. So I suppose what this post really means is go ahead and prepare cars for both magnet and non-magnet racing

Mark is right...... you really need to know what rules you will be running to do any proper set up on the cars....... What mods are allowed if any... Is this going to be box stock racing?? modified RTR chassis?? are scratch build chassis allowed?? or commerical chassis like the TSRF chassis and others?? What tires are going to be allowed??

The one thing you will need is a deeper guide for the routed track...... Slot-it makes a very nice routed track guide and is the one that I use on most of my cars.

For the non magnet cars you will have to add some lead to the chassis to help lower the CG of the cars...... As a rule I put mine just behing the guide and on the outside parts of the chassis....
Run with the body screws backed out so the body floats some....

Hi

One of the sectrets of doing magnet cars is to first PULL the manget and set the car up without. Magnets will MASK problems. If you just start with the magnet, you will not discover other problems. A magnet car is better if you set up without and then ADD the allowed magnets.

That being said, magnibraid is less than half as effective as scalex rail. Do your magnet set up accordingly.

It is a strange thing how a car that performs well on sectional track may not perform well on a routed track even with magnetic braid? while others that perform poorly on sectional track do much betterr on the the routed/magnetic braid combination? some bad on both & still others good on both?

Generally the advice here is good though! Set up for no magnets & then add them later if necessary.

I am not familiar with the construction techniques used to build the track in question, but the track I ran on for a time was just about ruined by the pan car guys loading magnets into thier Flys trying to get them to run like there was glue on the track or something??? The cars had so much down force that after a time the braid was being pulled up!!! Then the cars actually went slower because the braid was being dragged along the bottom of the car!?!?!!! All the while they were totally clueless wondering why I was passing them!!!!!!

Hmmmm, so far 2 major points for me then:

1. MagnaBraid not as magnetic as Ninco/Scalextric track
2. Setup without magnets first - Brilliant idea, why did I not think of that first ?

The best part of this is that all club members will be on an equally inexperienced footing !

I am waiting to hear about the rules, but probably std and mod cars of all classes. The problem is that most of the Club members have mod RTR cars already, so this class would have to stay.

From what I understand, the power is sufficient to run Parma 1/24 or even Strap motors, should they decide to do so.

Not sure about slot depth yet, will check soonest.

Not sure about surface finish yet either. Do the "International Slot Car rules " specifiy surface preparation methods and paints to be used ?

OK, so its off the local tyre balancing shop for lead then..

you shouldnt need any weight at all. I ran a fly racing porsche at plastic sectional track a while back and did not suffer until the track heated up (because of the halogen lights above it) and got bumpy then I just stuck 10g in the front behind the guide to keep it down instead of me having to work the throttle on the strights!
