Most motor racing folk look back to their favourite eras from time to time because we have brains that store memories. Like all 'disciplines' motor sport, in all its forms, has gone through highs and lows, but even during troughs, we can often reflect on something that has been stored in our minds with affection.

As usual your views and images will always be of great interest. And thanks.

A few memory joggers below.

Late 60s Can-Am coincided with my most active early slot years.

What’s with the duct tape over the visor on the #11 Ferrari?
I see that Mario applied tape to his visor, too. Thanks for the explanation, Trisha.

Beautiful shot of the Lotus Ford V8 .
Perhaps the most famous (infamous?) american version by Ford, the Edsel.

During last week’s Masters golf tournament Mercedes was emphasizing their racing history with footage of their 50’s-60’s rally cars in their advertising. Great seeing what looked like government limousines with rally lights flying up narrow mountain roads. Also showed a winning female driver from that era. Anyone have pictures to share?
So McLaren drove a Gurney built car in F1 and Gurney drove a McLaren in Can-Am? A small world at the top of any sport, isn’t it.

Also note the Dunlop patch on his driving suit with Firestones on the car. 😄

Surtees Lola T70 had a white hose on the right side leading to the cockpit at some races in the southwest US.

And Jim Hall said that when he was mulling over a problem and couldnt sleep, he often went into the shop and laid up fiberglass to calm his mind.

Trisha, Corvettes three wide at the start in 1960?!!

Jim Hall said that Stewart was pretty fast in the 2J but wasn’t able to fully exploit the ground effects downforce it generated. Drivers weren’t sure what would happen when the downforce effect was exceeded so were wary of pushing the limits. He said Vic Elford came closest to maximizing the performance near the end of his season in the car.
Was the fire suit a precaution for marshaling the Howmet turbine?

The picture of the 60s era firesuit by Trisha reminded me of the debt all racers owe to pioneer safety inventor Bill Simpson. He introduced parachutes to drag racing, Nomex to drivers suits and several other devices to the sport. He knew how to get your attention at product demos, obviously!

I can’t imagine sitting next to that turbine for 500 miles.

“Broken again, huh?”
I love the Chaparral winged cars, but one of the funniest race videos I’ve seen was the 2E limping back to the pits after the actuator mechanism broke and the wing was flapping up and down wildly. Sorry I couldn’t locate it tonight. I’ll keep looking.

Ronnie Bucknum, 1965? And they complain about today’s curbs being problematic!
Wonder if those mechanics are also in the Honda baseball team 😇

Hoffman imported some special edition Beetles into the US that are highly collectible these days according to a popular antiques show on TV.

My preference pendulum swings between functional elegance like the 2E or the Group C Jaguars and the sexy, flowing curves of the P4’s.

I saw the Shadow when it raced at Mid-Ohio. That huge V8 running on go-cart wheels was frightening.
