Even for non-car people, a lot can be learned from this invaluable source of social history. Dress, manners, hair styles, etiquette and the accompanying music all tell their own stories of an era recovering from War. The cars by comparison are especially worthy of note. From pre War heavyweights to the Lotus 23B in just a few short years. A revelation.

And more revelations. Beyond the Fringe from the Cambridge Footlights, for example. One short sketch by Miller, Cook, Moore and Bennett did more in Britain to break down barriers of social class than anything implemented by government, Beyond all this came The Beatles, of course.

My thanks again to everyone, including Mark, Kevan, Keith and Martin, for publishing all these superb videos.

Someone really ought to write a book about the social history of motor racing. The cars could be cut out completely, while the body text and photographs concentrate on what's left. Done properly it could be a riveting read, unlike some of the F1 autobiographies I've plodded through in recent times.

Just enjoyed the '63 vid, Mark. Many thanks. Wonderful footage again, and just how I remember it. I always loved the atmosphere in the paddock early in the morning at club meetings. People usually made time to talk as they changed sparking plugs, and pumped the crossplies up.

I don't suppose there are too many Mini owners who'd be glad to drive at Goodwood on skinny crossplies today.

Mum had a new mini in 1972, I learnt to drive in it a year later, it was fitted as factory standard with Dunlop crossplies, think they were C41s, that taught me about understeer very quickly, at replacement time she had Michelin xzx fitted, night and day.

I rolled a SAAB end over end. Doors would still open and close but I could not sit in the driver's seat without my head touching the roof. It had Michelin X radials, albeit skinny.
When the insurance adjuster came to look at it he arrived in a SAAB and according to my father took one look at the tires and went tsk, tsk which completely absolved me in my father's eyes.

Michelin Xs? Tantamount to driving on wet glass! But they lasted for EVER!

I was a big fan of Pirelli Cinturatos at the time, gripped like Mole Grips to a pipe, but wore reasonably nicely, and they transformed the 'understeer into the hedge' handling of a standard Imp.

Cinturatos do squeal a bit though.
