Your Golden Epoch?

Most motor racing folk look back to their favourite eras from time to time because we have brains that store memories. Like all 'disciplines' motor sport, in all its forms, has gone through highs and lows, but even during troughs, we can often reflect on something that has been stored in our minds with affection.

As usual your views and images will always be of great interest. And thanks.

A few memory joggers below.

Colin Chapman didn't always see eye to eye with the Italian 'tifosi'.

Graham Hill rounds the Nurburgring's Karussell in the beautiful Lotus 16 during the early days of his GP career. No one uses it but the full name for the Karussell is the Caracciola-Karussell.

The 1955 Nardi 'bisiluro' (twin-boom) car at Le Mans, 1955. An interesting contraption powered by a 750cc BMW engine. 'Twas blown awf the road by a D-Type.

An unfortunate end for the P25 driven by Tony Brooks at the 1956 British GP. Tony was less than impressed with the BRM's handling and famously commented: "At least it had the good grace to set fire to itself."

Oh yes, I LOVE that Nardi!

Such wonderfully 'off the wall' thinking, even if it was blown off by the D Types.

It was literally "blown off the road" by the slipstream of a D-type IIRC.

Gripping

Your post 462 of Fangio at Rouen, 1957, above simply reminds me of an old daubing of similar, which I found this afternoon whilst searching for a mislaid slot car. The bent nosecone on Fangio's 250F was acquired whilst he was lapping Jean Behra, as I'm sure you recall.

Nicely daubed!

I was not familiar with how he dented the car. The only thing I know about that race (without looking anything up) is that he said that he felt completely in tune with the car that day and the car was perfectly balanced. He enjoyed himself.

I regret never having seen Fangio in the flesh. It would have been nice to have shaken his hand.
Gripping

I saw Fangio just once. My late father disagreed. He, Fangio, gave a demonstration at the British GP, 1967, during the luncheon break. 'Twas a thrill but, the real stars of that day - in my eyes - were... everything 49 and associated wherewithal.

There were - to me - in those days, so many magical names, that I've forgotten few. However!

Jimmy Clark!

No need to add more.

Ah yes, the 906 is much 'squarer' in styling than the more rounded 910. Thanks Trisha.

That's an amazingly 'standard looking' MGB GT in the background.

A very standard-looking MGB, Kit. The good ol' days, eh, when a change of plugs and carb jets, plus racing numerals on the body, amounted to a 'racer'. Wish we could do the same today but, alas, we can't.

Incidentally, the standard 914/6 Porsche that finished 6th overall at Le Mans, 1970, completed the 24 Hours at an average speed of 99mph without even changing the tyres. All the mechanics did throughout was replenish the fuel tank and clean the windscreen.
