Most motor racing folk look back to their favourite eras from time to time because we have brains that store memories. Like all 'disciplines' motor sport, in all its forms, has gone through highs and lows, but even during troughs, we can often reflect on something that has been stored in our minds with affection.

As usual your views and images will always be of great interest. And thanks.

A few memory joggers below.

radial engines, is there any advantage of these
For aircraft, yes. Equal cooling for air cooled cylinders, lightweight (minimal) crank case and a very stiff and strong crankshaft.

Aircraft piston engine that is, presumably. Ship engines are montsrous. One in our local shipyard had 1 metre bore x 3 metre stroke cylinders with at least 6 of them in line. They're not much use for flight though . . .

I understand that he is a big Fiat 500 Abarth fan - the 1960's version that is.
Rotaries are different animals from radials. With a rotary the crank is stationary and the prop is bolted to the cylinders. This has the advantage of perfect balance because the rotating mass is symmetrical. The main disadvantage of course (aprt from those above) is the enormous inertial energy of the engine. A small change in engine speed caused a big reaction in the light air frame. This could be turned to an advantage in a dogfight but it was more of a nuisance.
I always think it's a pity that classic GP cars have rollhoops nowadays.
Case proven - look at this abomination. Is it really necessary to do this?

Babs after having been exhumed from Pendine Sands in 1969.

. . . .and at the Goodwood Revival 2005 after restoration. I don't know what they did to be sure there wasn't a repeat of the chain breaking and decapitating the driver.

Harold Bull who built and raced Stripduster celebrated his 98th birthday this year. It was IMO the best looking of the small engines cars. It had a blown, fuel burning BMC engine

Note for Trisha - the springing medium was VW torsion bars within the front frame cross tube.

Fabulous! Thanks for posting. Alfred Neubauer was playing his part at the end with tongue firmly in cheek! An all star cast.
Yes. I have just run up against this. I thought that it was my ineptitude.
The colour is the giveaway - rosso corsa or kak bruno.

Nah ones a one night stand you don’t mention, the other you never stop loving.
And the costs of running them are equally proportionate.

Great photo. It should have had the UFO livery though!

The commentary that came with the photo said that it was on it's way to the circuit on race day.

The Napier Railton in action during a race. In a 1/32nd field of cars this one is like a 1/24th car.

A tipo B monoposto Alfa Romeo dismantled. This shows the compicated split propshaft arrangement, supposedly to give a lower seating position for the driver. To my eyes, it was one of the tallest cars of its era.

I love Seagrave's transporter - a Sentinel steam lorry. These vehicles were every bit as useful as the early diesel powered lorries but development was knocked on the head by politicians who were in thrall to the diesel promoters who received preferential legislation. One was still working at Tyne Dock in the 1950's.
