Nearly there - the quest is almost complete!

Hello Everyone

Having recently had an email to say that my latest few slot cars are almost finished, my little brain has been clicking away because these few cars will complete my "quest" which has lasted almost five years, cost more money than I care to think about - all to own a complete grid of slot cars that raced at the Le Mans 24 hour race in 2004.

The few days after returning from the race back in June 2004 I realised that I could piece together a few cars and possibly repaint them to make a small collection of cars that I had just enjoyed watching race. Over the following 18 months I tracked down a few cars from SCX, Scalextric, Fly and Carrera, and realised that I actually could try and create a collection of all 48 cars that had raced!!!

A bit of google searching got me in touch with Rene Christensen (who was well advanced with the same idea!!!) and through Rene I got in touch with Milan Tomasek. The grid when complete, will consist of a handful of ready made cars, a load of repainted cars courtesy of Milan and a small selection of hand made cars (also lovingly created by Milan).

Whilst I will be very happy to own the whole grid, two questions are rolling around my head;

What will I do next? (maybe get a life!!!!! - I've said it before anyone else says it!)

and has anyone else gone to similar lengths to put together grids from Le Mans or other races / seasons of motor sport?

Anyway I'd love to hear what other members of Slot Forum have done that fall into this sort of bracket ....

PS thought I would leave you with a picture of the "nearly finished" grid.......

this is what you should do

1. remortgage the house
2. build a huge 3 or 4 lane LeMans Circuit
3. go digital, get them all chipped
4. invest either with a Scorpious or Oxigen or Davic system and race them all at the same time

hey, you did ask

A great story and collection. I am about 5 cars shy of completing my focus. However of late, I am also finding myself thinking about what I will do when it's complete!

My collection consists of seventies Scalextric (Hornby) cars, no race or model focus as such - only nostalgia!

Let us know what you are planning to do - I need some inspiration!

Hello Again

In terms of a plan I was thinking of simply visiting Le Mans again, say in 2010, and then recreating the whole grid from next years race..... (or another major motor race......)

......but first I will finish building our extension (and my current MDF track) and look forward to more loft space for another track or two in the new extension!!!

Nice collection!

How about digging through history? Have a look at some of the 60s 70s early 80s grids some interesting stuff there.
mgs through to porsche 924 carerras, back to the days of 4 blokes in a transit van turning up and hoping to qualify, borrowing parts off each other (can you imagine that today?) a very different era to that of todays highly funded corporate efforts.

The lack of some models availability could also give you some challenges too

haybales instead of armco etc..........
a mulsanne straight with no chicane

cheers

You could be onto something there..... which year of Le Mans has there been the most interesting / diverse mix of cars racing?

I had already thought of something along these lines from the 1991 Mazda winning year (being a huge Johnny Herbert fan), but would be open to everyones thoughts........ and I might just sort out a few Johhny Herbert related cars as a collection...

A shame you didn't get back to Le Mans a year earlier. I would have joined you as it was the first year I went and I was passionate about that year's collection of cars, from the Bentleys to the Corvettes.

The idea does appeal to me, and the only similar idea in this line has been to put together a collection of classic rally cars, say from a Monte Carlo rally of a suitable vintage.

True, or 2005 when the Aston Martin returned. I always have thought that 2004 was a pretty poor year car wise (too many customer R8s) although producing good racing.

Best years for variety would be 1989 1995 and 1998.
