I thought as much, figured it would mess up the clear. So how do I remove their decals and paint?

as mentioned elsewhere, at least in Canada, many of us use Castrol Super clean - an automotive parts degreaser (available at Canadian Tire stores) - i have used it on clear parts and all other plastics with great success removing all types of paint etc and no damage yet ... but whatever you try go slowly and test first !!

T-Cut works well - a little spot on a rag and polish the paint/decal/whatever off in a couple of minutes.

I soak my windows in 90% isopropyl alcohol, and check on it every 1/2 hour,and to my surprise,no problems,and works like a charm.

I have seen suggestions of using Isopropyl but I don't really know where I can readily buy it, with the nail varnish remover its a simple visit to superdrug (however I did notice that one of the shells I was preparing got a bit tacky as I forgot it was soaking, doh!!!)

 

What I would do use some clear plastic that you are not going to use and try different chemicals and check out the reaction on the plastic?
Myself I use Isopropyl its been great for me but I can't tell you where to get it because I live in the US?
Somebody on the forum should be able to help you out.

I have had very good luck with Castrol Super clean for stripping windows and bodies. Please use gloves and such when using this chemical as it will attack the natural oils in your skin! (not pleasant)

When you have this stuff around the house, you will probably find lots of uses for it (dissolving most any sort of grease or oil is what it is made for).

 

Isopropyl Alcohol can be bought from Maplins or eBay.
I have not used it on windows.
I use a finger nail.

 

Due to huge experience in this field, (correcting mistakes on my paintjobs on plastic kits) Mr Muscle oven cleaner does not seem to bother the clear parts on those. Spray it on parts, leave in an old ice cream tub sealed (or even a plastic bag) overnight and rinse off. Be sure to use gloves, though.

Fairy Power spray is now the product of chioce for this task, although I haven't got around to using it myself. No reports yet of it crazing clear Polystyrene in Airfix kits!

Isopropyl is the stuff. I have cleaned off the white bits around the headlight covers on Slot It Jag's by soaking for a while. Always keep it in a solid container with a lid that is as air tight as possible. I use a Maplins component box. It's safe and keeps the stuff from evaporating away.

Or you can soak it in marmalade for as week. lol what day is it.

 

I have a Maplin 5 minutes down the road so will give them a call and see if the have any Isopropyl (If I can pronounce it) and use a kitchen click box or something for th soaking, I gather the cleaner can be used for multiple projects (cars)?

 

This works for me. Both from Maplins. Cost for the stuff and the box about £15.00 but kept sealed and safe it will do dozens of cars. This box size allows you to get total immersion. Be careful it is not the best thing to breathe, swallow or wash your feet in. Every now and again you can decant it out, clean out the box, filter the liquid back in to collect and bits of paint or dead animals.

Please treat it with caution.

 

You want to put your cap back on that IPA can Monky or you will have none left.
I clean my IPA like Monkfish says above by putting a sheet of kitchen paper inside a funnel (50p from the pound shop) I then pour the IPA back into the tin through the funnel and the paper collexts the paint fragments etc.

IPA is much friendlier to cars than the Acetone Free Nail polish remover but is more expensive and takes longer.

 

The tin was empty.

 

I've only had to do this once with a Scalextric Beetle. I put a few dots of paint on the unseen roof section with the intention of trying a few products. However while pondering what to use first I rubbed the edge of the paint with a thumbnail and to my surprise it worked. So I scraped the rest of the paint off with my thumbnail and it didn't mark the screen. I polished the screen with a soft cloth and touched up the black painted window frames.

If you turn the car over now it still has a polka dot headlining.

 

For removing decals on windows I allways use toothpaste, carpolish en then some silverpolish. Works fine for me.

 

NUTS!!!!!!

I brough a couple of pots of Tamiya "Flat Base" expecting it to be an udercoat, looked like one as it sprays on and turns white, good coverage etc etc. Went to put it in soapy water to give it a slight rub down before putting the first coating of colour only to find it simply washed off.

Turns out that its actually an addative to paint to make it loko matt, as if you can't just buy a matt paint.

Does anyone know of a good undercoat that I can use with my airbrush? (not a fan of the big cans of spray paint as they have to be done outside and wast soooo much paint)

Going to get a beer now and have a huff on the sofa, totally buggered up my plans tonight :-(
