I was born and brought up in Milnerton, a suburb of Cape Town, a few kilometers from the Killarney motor racing circuit. As a youngster, I used to cycle to Killarney to watch as many of the races as I could.

The most memorable races were the Cape 3-Hour events, a round of the Springbok Series for 'big banger' sports cars, held from 1966 to 1973, which attracted most of the top 'works' teams to the Kyalami 9-Hour, at least. The 'works' teams rarely came to Killarney but many of the top privateers competed in the full series.

I still have vivid memories of the race in 1967, with the Lola T70 Mk IIIs driven by Paul Hawkins and Mike D'Udy, the Ford GT40s of David Prophet and Ed Nelson, the Lola T70 of Doug Serrurier (sponsored by Wall's ice-cream, with "Stop me and buy one" painted across the back of the spoiler!), the Ferrari 330P3/P4 of David Piper and the Porsche 906 of Tony Dean. The race was an epic battle between Hawkins and D'Udy from start to finish, but 15 minutes before the end, with D'Udy leading, the engine threw a rod and burst into flames.

Russell. Thanks, too, for sharing those memories. There was meant to be a 906 at Zwartkops this year but it didn't seem to appear - maybe I was in the beer tent at the time!

The last car, the Automa Sporac, is an interesting one. I can't find out much about it except that it was originally built in 1972. It could be a local RSA kit-car, but Google is of little help. From the air filter sticking out the back (not in this photograph), the engine looked to be a healthy V8.

The green one (a replica of Pipers '67 Kyalami car) is BMW V-12 powered - a few nice hi-res pics of it in this thread:

.... and the other two (red ones, naturally) are Ferrari (ex-400i with Dorino / Gotech MFI fuel injection) V-12 powered.

On Rapid motion Africa - (local motor racing TV program) - they interview the driver of the big Mclaren - and in the background is the Porsche 904 in the garage - must have had problems.

The Mclaren only used 2 gears at Swartkops - 1st and 2nd!!!!!

Again for me Sarel van der Merwe in the big Galaxie - was simply outstanding.... when he lost control, and the without any effort regaining control was outstanding. He truly is one of SA's great drivers......

 

Engine bay of Type P4 - as requested by P4Replica! That would be fun on the way to the office!

If you're going to the Zwartkops Springbok Historics (or for that matter, Killarney, CT ) again this year, please remember me - all and any photos of the Bailey-Edwards P4 replicas, either static, or on track, would be very much appreciated.

Incidentally, that other U.K. based Ferrari P4 replica that I think I told you about, in our last emails (which was being fitted with an ex-F1 3.5 Litre Ferrari V-12, at the time) probably won't make it to this years races (unless the owner decides to air-freight it at the last minute). The conversion / development work is still 'ongoing' at the time of writing.

That's Ferdi van N's B-E P4 in your pics, as you can see from name on the door.
Looks like he's had a minor shunt - fiberglass on front part of the nose is crazed - or so it appears in your reduced photo.
I haven't traded emails with Ferdi in a few months. Last I heard, he ran the car at a Cobra Club meeting at Zwartkops back in June. So by 'Kyalami a couple of months back', do you mean he was running in the 9 Hours Retro meeting, back in November 17th ? I'd gone through Motorpics.ZA gallery looking to see if any of the B-E P4 replicas were there, and found nothing.
