Cool indeed! I grew up close to Knoxville, Iowa, where sprint cars are a way of life. Great work on the frame; you've done a great job capturing the feel of how they're constructed.

 

Real nice JW, Can't wait to see this with one of your fabulous paint schemes. Will you be producing a grid?

 

Thanks chief, but I don't paint hard body cars anymore. Too much work and too many chances to screw things up. This car will be painted and the final post by a master painter and photographer.
Full grid? No, just two cars and this is the first.

 

Will something like that fit on a Ninco track?

Not sure. It is a 1/24th scale and the guide will be full depth. If Ninco track is set up for 1/32 then might be tight and require a cut down guide.

I wonder what else do you do....just build slotcars?

The ninco idea will need a shallow and narrow guide and with the weight of the 16D those sponge tyres will last about five laps on the abrasive track surface....not really recommended.

Graphic artist by trade. Illustration, sign painting, layout and design. Been slow last few years so I started building these contraptions for other people. After a shallow learning curve, business has been brisk and I have learned a LOT!

Got the frame painted this morning.
Since the name of this build is "Sprintcar" went with a 9/33 gear ratio.

With wheels and motor carefully installed.

Time to turn attention to the body work and related details...

 

This is really, really cool. I wish it was easier for the amatuer modeller to build a similar thing, I'm ready t go with a tarmac-modified but have no idea how to do the bump cage.

 

Neither did I LMP, I just started by soldering one hoop and went from there!

Got the driver and some of the steering gear installed along with the side pipes and the foot shields.

What sort of solder do you use for the chassis and frame?

Have just started doing soldering of electrical contacts on motors, guides etc for kits and new builds after a 35 year gap, so could do with some guidance...!

Would like to start making some brass rod chassis, like in the old days (60's / 70's)....

Made a couple of brass chassis back then, but used Araldite epoxy resin to hold it together.

I use "Stay-Brite". It comes in little tubes with acid flux and is .05% silver solder. Best all around stuff there is.

Final mockup before sending out to the painter. All plastic parts and pieces come from the Monogram sprintcars (1988). All plastic pieces will be epoxied to the brass and steel frame pieces to ensure secure mounting. However, this in-no-way avoids damage after a crash!!! Body panels will be protected by being mounted within the parameter of the space frame but the wings will shed for sure. Not much can help that... unless I make wings from aluminum.
