i will be checking lots of the posts on here so i can try to get upto speed on this very interesting hobby.

i`m a total newbie, but i have been on many rc forums and am always helpfull with other members once i have learned myself, lol.

my first few questions are very newbie questions

Hi Stew,

Welcome to Slot Forum
Image
.

Digital, is a new toy, made by most of the leading track brands now. It involves having a digital chip in the car, that at special track pieces, with a push of the button on the controller, you can change lane
Image
. Also allows you to race more than 2 cars on a two lane track
Image
.

Slot Cars, is a general term for all
Image
. With Scalextric, SCX, Ninco, NSR, Slot. It, Parma, Carrera etc, etc its sometimes much easier just to say Slot cars, or Slot racing.

Hope that helps.

Where are you based/living

thanks rollover, should i decide on which type of track to buy and stick with that or can the different makes of track be slotted together?
at the moment, my son has two scalextric sets and 4 cars that came with the ready sets. i like the way we can have any track layout by using any parts from each set to make our own unique track!!

would i have to stick to buying scalextric cars for the scalextric track or do all slot cars fit? in essence, are all slot cars built to the same standard/size/scale etc etc.. ?

i did warn!! i`m a total newbie lol.

i`m from carlisle in sunny north cumbria

thanks

Scalextric is one the big slot car manufacturers, some others are Ninco Carrera and Scx.

Digital is basically powering the cars with a waveform DC signal so cars can be in the same lane and switch lanes, as compared to analog in which cars can only stay in one slot. It lets you run 6 cars in the same slot. The only downside is it is more expensive as the cars need more parts (depends on the manufacturer, there is no standard for digital).

You can learn a lot by googling the manufacturers websites and checking them out.

There are adaptors to go from one make to another. You need to be aware that there are two types of scalextric track, classic and sport. Classic is identical to SCX track and Hornby do converters between the old and new standards. Ninco track is a little wider and they do make adaptors to mate to scalextric. Not sure about other makes. Generally all cars run on all track, and they all use 12V so systems are pretty interchangeable. Except digital where like VHS vs Betamax we have 4 competing formats all incompatible with each other. This is very new (last 2 years) so we await the victor....
There are several different scales, but all manufacturers make 1/32nd which is the original scalextric standard.

No Problem Stew,

I use Scalextric track at home
Image
, have loads of Scalextric cars. But you can use cars from other manufacturers, with little or no difficuitiy. Can also use track from Ninco and SCX with the help of some merging track pieces.
Carrera have the only real problem
Image
, using a larger, deeper guide.
There are three scales of racing 1:43rd (Micro Scalextric) 1:32nd (the main scale) and 1:24th (which Carrera are the only one's I know who make them

).

cheers riko, shall i just use the original ( standard ) scalextric track that comes in the kits? seems to me an easy way of doing things, i`m probs stating the blatantly obvious, but as i`ve said, i`m a noob and i`m not ashamed lol.

rollover dude, i`m glad you have mentioned the micro scalextric, i`ve just ordered myself the min set off ebay, 1st reason was the price was great for genuine scalextric and 2nd, when i have limited space, my son and i can still use a track with many corners and straights without taking up much room.
my question is this, are they any good?? probs should have asked this before i committed myself, but i just couldn`t say no lol.

Hi again Stew,
No don't think there is any problems with the Micro Scalextric sets/cars
Image
, not the most popular, but does solve the problem if you have limited space
Image
.

If as you say you already have Scalextric sets, I would stick to just buying Scalextric track, but experiment with cars if you wish
Image
.

The main thing is to have fun, enjoy
