Hi for my 40th my Wife has offered to buy me a scalexttic set.

I have been looking at the new digital sets (even though no one seems to have any at present)!

Can any one please give me the low down on which one I should go for or should I wait & see what sets are brought out in 2007?

Also can anyone tell me where I can find out the space I would need to set up these tracks. I can find out the amount of track that comes with the sets but not how much room they take up.

I hope this all makes sence.

Thanks in advance for help/guidance offered.

Regards & Happy New Year

The 2007 sets have been announced but details of the amount of track and so on in each one are a bit sketchy at the moment. I think all the 2006 sets, Ignition, Triple Rivals, A1GP and Lane Change Challenge have been superseded, although most of the cars in those are still available - so it's a case of wait and see for a few weeks.

Try to find out which ones have the 6 car PB, and get one of those

Usually the box has the space required printed on it.

Hi Kevo,

Like many things, it all depends upon what you want to achieve and the available budget. Certainly a 6 car power base is better than a 4 car one provided you actually plan to race more than 4 cars or want to be able to send the signals captured via the PB to a third party unit such as a lap counter or a PC. If neither of these are important then a 4 car PB will probably be OK. That said, with a 4 car PB, the addition of extras such as a lapcounter will make it just as expensive as the 6 car version and less flexible.

I bought the Lane change challenge (and a few extra bits of track) and we had some friends around on News Years Day and ran 5 cars on it. It was great fun! The LCC is definitely a good set and you could probaly secure one for about ÂŁ140 if you shop around.

For much of the time (and the layout was probably about 6 metres in length) 4 cars were a sensible number and with the track additions, it was possible to add kinks and curves to the layout so as to make it smaller (but tighter) than the definitive layout on the box.

Presumably, you have checked the scalextric website? aren't the sizes printed there?

I just got the triple ignition set with 3 Boxters,..runs well and quite fast too

It was a x-mas present from my girlfriend (and myself)

Actually bought it at a Toys'R'Us store here in Denmark,.. they always have quite a lot of them, and at a good price too.

Track layout is pretty simple in this set, and track isnt long enough (think approx. 5,5meters) with the fast cars, so I'll surely buy some xtra track very soon.

C1201 Digital Super GT (digital) Lane changing action with an Aston Martin DBR, Dodge Viper and a Porsche 911 GT3R will take you on a wild ride.

C1202 World Championship (digital) This is THE set. Two lanes, four cars. Wow! Honda, Ferrari, McLaren & Renault fight it out for the podium.

Those are the only 2 sets t be relased 2006, and im guessing Super GT will replace the Old 3 Car set.

it seems that they both have a 4 Car PB, and World Championship has a lapcounter included.

Hi Kevo

On the Scalectrix website they do mention sizes for some of the sets but not all, However a closer inspection of the image for each set shows the intended layout ie (oval, figure of eight etc) but no indication of the power base. From my limited expierience and as mentioned in fmfm20j reply i would recomend the 6 car power base. This gives you the flexibility later if required to race upto 6 cars at the same time but more importantly it has an higher power rating to cope with the additional cars and if you race with fewer less chance of overloads etc. The 6 car power base is separatly available item C7003 at ÂŁ45.

For sizes of various tracks and designs you could buy the scalectrix plan book it shows what track goes where and various plan options. If you feel adventurous there are a number of pc track layout software such as track designer by scalectrix ( ok but limited with digital track pieces) or the latest track software called trackpower which has all the items you need to create a layout not only for scalectrix but Ninco, SCX and Carrera. I would recommend Trackpower as it is upgraderble you can email infor@trackpower.net for information or go to thier web site and download a demo version at www.trackpower.net. Only cost 14.95 euros about ÂŁ10.

Thanks to everyone for thier help.

I really just want to have some fun with it.

I think I'll wait & get a 6 power base as a lap counter sounds like a good idea.

If anything else comes to mind or you hear anything I would appreciate the continued help.

Regards & thanks.

PS Birthday in June so hopefully 2007 kit out by then.

I can't say enough good things about RichG's Lap Tower -- this as an endorsement of the 6-car powerbase. Although I only race four cars on my track, and I like the simplicity of the 4-car powerbase, the "digital lapcounter" that Scaley sells is a pale shadow of the functionality that I get with RichG's Lap Tower. Scaley should really buy the design from Rich and mass produce it. THANKS AGAIN, Rich!

Hi Kevo

Unfortunately waiting may not be the best idea if all the 2007 SSD sets (like the new 2006 sets) are 4 car powerbases. The most economical way of getting a 6 car powerbase is by purchasing the original Lane Change Challenge set which is now discontinued but at the moment still readily available in many high street outlets and via the large independant dealers.

Have you tried Jadlamracing and slotcity?

Jadlam advertise mainly as an eBay shop but you can also buy direct from them. Call them on 01458 835588 between 8am and 11am or email Jon Adlam direct on jadlam.racing@btinternet.com (he's pretty responsive) . They claim to be Hornby's biggest distributor in the UK. I got mine from them. SlotCity, I think, are internet only. Their prices are keen.

Good luck.

Be a little careful with the eBay ones. You really need to be sure that the power base is revision 1.5. This is only absolutely guaranteed on a recent build new unit. If you are buying from eBay, you should ask for written confirmation that it is a 1.5 before bidding. A 1.5 power base will show as a 1.5 on the display when you power it up. The older units have quality and overload issues and are best avoided.
